Carter, a potential NBA first-round pick, was originally slated to have his operation in Honolulu but was convinced to have it on the mainland by an NBA doctor. Dr. James Andrews, who's operated on Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Bo Jackson, among others, will perform Carter's operation. ---- The Moanalua Golf Club will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The club, founded by Honolulu banker Samuel Mills Damon in 1898, is the oldest golf course in the U.S. west of the Rocky Mountains. ----- Today, Anna Umemura will take on Christel Tomori for the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship after winning semifinal matches yesterday at the Oahu Country Club. He posted a 6-1 record with an ERA of 0.84 for the Falcons this season. Komine, who'll join former Iolani player Danny Kimura at Nebraska, turned down scholarship offers from UH and New Mexico. ---- The 9th Aloha State Games, Hawaii's version of the Olympics, will kick off a week from today with a torch-lighting ceremony at the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Carter's NBA hopes were dampened when the former UH point guard injured his shoulder at a pre-draft camp in Chicago. He is scheduled to undergo surgery next week in Honolulu. Carter had been tabbed as a possible first-round draft pick. ---- Three other players with local ties were chosen in the Major League Baseball amateur draft yesterday. UH pitcher Randon Ho was the 35th round pick of the Cleveland Indians, Castle High's Matt Ramie was taken in the 36th round by the Indians, and Molokai's Miles Luuloa was picked in the 45th round by the Detroit Tigers. ---- UH water polo players Marie-Luc Arpin and Karen Umemura were named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America squad yesterday. Arpin was a first-team pick while Umemura was named to the third team. Both are from Canada. ---- Punahou athletes Onaona Miller and Bennett Valencia were named sportspersons of month for May by the Honolulu Quarterback Club. Miller led the Buffanblu girls basketball team to the state title and Valencia, the state record holder in the 400 meters, was a key force on the Punahou boys track team that also copped a state crown. ---- Moanalua High School basketball coach Eddie Maruyama, 36, has resigned, saying he'd like to spend more time with his family. A graduate of Kailua High, Cofran was an All-WAC first team pick at shortstop this past season. She will play for a Japanese entertainment company called "Over the Record" and receive housing, meals, transportation and a monthly salary. ---- UH outfielder Darren Blakely was the fifth-round pick of the Anaheim Angels in the Major League amateur draft yesterday. Composed of guards who work City and County stands at Oahu's beaches, TO outscored runner-up Ft. DeRussy and third place Team Kauai to win the title. Competitors squared off in five events: 1.2-mile ocean swim, paddleboard rescue, 2-mile individual paddleboard, medley relay, and beach flags. ---- Australia's Mark Pederson won the men's open title and Aruba's Rebecca Wolters the women's at the Da Kine Classic windsurfing competition on Saturday at Kanaha Beach on Maui. ---- The Honolulu Hurricanes are 3-3 in the Professional Indoor Football League after losing to Colorado, 42-34, last week. The Hurricanes travel to the mainland to take on Louisiana this Saturday. ---- For $100, wrestling enthusiasts can participate in a clinic conducted by a world class coach and wrestlers. Yale-bound Onaona Miller scored 22 points for the underdog Buffanblu, who had lost twice to the Mustangs in preseason. Kim Taylor had 19 points to lead previously unbeaten Kalaheo. In earlier games, Waiakea topped Baldwin, 52-34, for third place; McKinley edged Maryknoll, 35-34, for fifth; and Lahainaluna defeated Waipahu, 49-36, for seventh. ---- Iolani will try for its third straight Hawaii high school baseball title when the Raiders take on Mid-Pacific tonight at Aloha Stadium. Iolani beat OIA champ Waianae, 7-4, in one semifinal last night, and Mid-Pacific, the tournament's top seed, beat Baldwin, 9-3. ---- The Minnesota Monsters crushed the Honolulu Hurricanes, 42-20, in an Professional Indoor Football League game last night at Blaisdell Arena. Because of a shipping snafu, the Monsters played the first half in the Hurricanes' road uniforms. ---- With one day remaining, ozeki (champion) Wakanohana has the sole lead of the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament with an 11-3 mark. Waka beat Akebono (Chad Rowan) to put the Hawaii-born grand champion at 9-5. Ozeki Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani) lost to Waka's brother, grand champion Takanohana. Miller and freshman teammate Milia Macfarlane paced the Buffanblu with 14 points apiece. Mona Amisone scored 14 for Waiakea. In the other semifinal, unbeaten Kalaheo shot down a determined Baldwin team, 58-48. Kim Taylor poured in 26 points to spark the Mustangs. Aloha Santiago, the girls' state discus and shot put champion, powered in 13 points for the Bears. The championship game will be televised live on KFVE. ---- With victories last night at Aloha Stadium, Mid-Pacific, Iolani, Waianae, and Baldwin advanced to the semifinals of the boys' state high school baseball tournament. Top seeded Mid Pacific beat Kauai High, 3-1; No. 2 Waianae doubled up on Mililani, 6-3; Iolani upset third-seeded Maui High, 6-2; and Baldwin topped No. 4 Waiakea, 5-2. In tonight's matchups, Baldwin will take on Mid-Pacific and Waianae will meet Iolani. ---- Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani) beat Akebono (Chad Rowan) in the feature bout of the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament last night. With the win, Musashimaru improved to 10-3, and he shares the tournament lead with fellow ozeki (champion) Wakanohana and maegashira (senior wrestler) Dejima. Akebono is 9-4, a mark he shares with five others. ---- UH Wahine star Nani Cockett will try out for the U.S. National Team next month. She had hoped to land a spot with a team in the Women's NBA but wasn't drafted. Cockett, who needs just a couple courses to earn a UH degree, is also considering playing in Europe, much like former Wahine player Judy Mosley did prior to hooking with a team in the states. ---- For the second straight year, the BYU-Hawaii women are the NAIA tennis champions. With two days left in the tournament, being held at Tulsa, Okla., the Seasiders have already scored enough points to clinch the title. The BYUH men are currently in a tie for fourth place and have a chance at a title as well. ---- The Honolulu Hurricanes (2-2) will take on the Minnesota Monsters (0-4) in a Professional Indoor Football League game tonight at Blaisdell Arena. ---- A meeting to discuss the revival of the ancient Hawaiian sport of Holua sledding will be held on Tuesday, May 26 at 4 p.m. at Wailoa State Park (pavilion #1) in Hilo. Top-seeded Kalaheo dispatched of Konawaena, 48-29; No. 2 Punahou pounded Kauai High, 77-33; No. 3 Waiakea whipped McKinley, 76-54; and No. 4 Baldwin needed double overtime to beat Maryknoll, 38-37. In tonight's matchups, Punahou will battle Waiakea, and Kalaheo will take on Baldwin. ---- The boys' state baseball tournament kicked off last night with four first-round games at Aloha Stadium. Baldwin beat Roosevelt, 5-1; Kauai High edged Kalani, 2-0; Mililani topped Hilo, 4-1; and defending state champion Iolani nipped Aiea, 3-2. In today's quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Waiakea will take on Baldwin, second-seeded Waianae will face Mililani, top-seeded Mid-Pacific will meet Kauai High, and third-seeded Maui will square off against Iolani. ---- Hawaii's Akebono (Chad Rowan) and Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani) share the lead of Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament with five others. With three bouts remaining, all have 9-3 records. ---- Eric White has been awarded $31,500 in damages as a result of a racial slur directed at him by Rob Wallace, the son of UH basketball coach Riley Wallace. In February 1995, while sitting near the UH bench in the Special Events Arena (now the Sheriff Center) during a game against Utah, White loudly heckled Riley Wallace. During a heated verbal exchange with White, Rob Wallace, then the student manager for the UH team, called White a "nigger." Wallace was suspended as student manager following the incident and is now working in Las Vegas. ---- UH Wahine softball outfielder Tia Morenz was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America second team announced yesterday. With an 8-3 record, Akebono is tied for the tourney lead with nine others, including fellow grand champion Takanohana and ozekis (champions) Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) and Wakanohana. Akebono and his fiancee Christine Reiko Kalina are the parents of a 7-pound, 7-ounce girl who has yet to be named. ---- Konawaena, Maryknoll, Kauai High, and McKinley advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hawaii High School Girls State Basketball Tournament with first-round wins last night. Konawaena beat Kahuku, 67-59; Maryknoll edged Waipahu, 30-25; Kauai topped Nanakuli, 63-57; and McKinley outscored Lahainaluna, 54-49. In tonight's games, all at UH's Stan Sheriff Center, top-seeded Kalaheo will take on Konawaena, No. 2 Punahou will square off against Kauai High, No. 3 Waiakea will meet McKinley, and No. 4 Baldwin will take on Maryknoll. Punahou is the defending state champion. ---- The state high school baseball tournament begins today with four games at Aloha Stadium. The matchups are Baldwin vs Roosevelt, Kauai High vs Kalani, Hilo vs Mililani, and Iolani vs Aiea. Mid-Pacific, Maui, Waianae, and Waiakea, the tournament's top four seeds, have drawn byes into tomorrow's quarterfinals. Iolani is the defending state champion. ---- UH home football games will start at 6 p.m. this season, an hour earlier than seasons past. The move was made as a result of a survey of fans, who said that an earlier kickoff was preferable. Fighting in the superheavyweight (201+ lbs.) division, the 5-11, 203-pound Ah Kiong won five consecutive matches over much heavier and taller foes. "They looked at me as kind of a joke," he said. Raised in San Francisco, Ah Kiong moved to Hawaii a year ago and is a math teacher at Kaimuki High School. In 1976, Julio Rodriguez was Hawaii's first Golden Gloves titlist, winning the flyweight division. ---- A fourway deadlock for the lead now exists in the Tokyo Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Tied with 8-2 records are champions Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) and Wakanonaha along with Takatoriki and Kotonishiki. Grand champions Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) and Takanohana are in a group of eight rikishi with 7-3 marks. ---- The pre-conference foes appear formidable for next season's UH men's basketball team with seven potential opponents having earned spots in the 1998 NCAA Tournament held two months ago. In November and December, the Rainbows will host 4 four-team tournaments and the 8-team Rainbow Classic. Possible Rainbow opponents that made the Big Dance this past season were Princeton, Florida State, Murray State, NC-Charlotte, Oklahoma State, Northern Arizona, and Nicholls State. In a related story, guard Chad Hook, citing disatisfaction with the UH program, has indicated that he'll transfer to another school. He averaged 1.2 points and .7 rebounds per game this past season. ---- The 1998 Hawaii High School Girls State Basketball Tournament opens today with four first-round match-ups. Both won yesterday after suffering upset losses on opening night. Eleven wrestlers are 2-0, including grand champion Takanohana and his brother Wakanohaha. ---- On the local college basketball scene, both UH and Hawaii Pacific announced good news on the recruiting front. The Rainbows are on the verge of signing Predrag Savovic, a 6-6 swingman who played at Alabama-Birmingham this past season. Savovic, who averaged 13.1 points for UAB, requested and received his release from that school and will redshirt at UH next year. Meanwhile, HPU signed Delbert Howell, the unofficial leading scorer on the junior college level this past season. Howell, a 6-2 shooting guard, averaged 29 points a contest for Malcolm X College (Ill.) but was not recognized because his JC coach quit at season's end and did not submit final statistics for the team. ---- The UH Wahine water polo team achieved its goal of reaching the Final Four of the National Collegiate Championships held in Los Angeles this past weekend. At last week's Eastern Division championships he won those events; in addition, he was the high jump winner and was Castle's first-place 4x400 relay team. The victory total the Bows will need to qualify, 7 or 8, has yet to be determined. UH last appeared in a bowl game in 1992, a Holiday Bowl victory, and have been passed over for postseason play six times despite winning seven or more games since becoming a Division I team. ---- LA Lakers officials announced that the NBA team will conduct preseason workouts in Hawaii this coming October. The Lakers, who held preseason camp elsewhere last season after holding October workouts in Hawaii from 1987-'96, will also play exhibition games at the Stan Sheriff Center on Oct. 14 and 16 against a yet-to-be-named opponent. ----- The UH Wahine are seeded fourth for 12-team Women's Water Polo National Collegiate Championships that begins tomorrow at USC and Long Beach State pools. Hawaii (27-10) is bracketed with San Diego State (5th seed) and Princeton (12). Earlier this season, Na Wahine split a pair of matches with the Aztecs and blitzed Princeton. Bracket winners will advance to Saturday's Final Four. ---- The OIA baseball playoffs swung into action yesterday with four games at Aloha Stadium. Pearl City edged Castle, 2-1; Kaiser nipped Waipahu, 1-0; Waianae snuck by Kalaheo, 2-1; and McKinley beat Campbell, 4-2. In today's quarterfinal games, also at Aloha Stadium, Kaiser takes on Mililani, Waianae squares off against Kalani, McKinley meets Aiea, and Pearl City faces Roosevelt. ---- Hawaii's entry in the Professional Indoor Football League, the Honolulu Hurricanes, will play their first-ever regular season home game when they take on the Green Bay Bombers on Saturday night at Blaisdell Arena. The Hurricanes are 1-1 and last played two weeks ago when they beat the Texas Bullets, 46-40. ---- The UH Wahine softball team is ranked 10th in this week's USA Today Top 25 Poll. A couple of staples on the local running scene, the Hawaiian Style 8-K and the Hard Rock Cafe 10-K will not fly this year because the number of entries have dropped and sponsorship has been hard to come by. "I think there are just too many races on the calendar now," said Honolulu Marathon Association president Jim Barahal. "The average person doesn't want to spend $15, $20, $25 every weekend to enter a race." ---- Hawaii small college tennis teams have had a good year with the UH-Hilo men (NCAA Division II nationals), the HPU men (No. 5 NAIA), and the BYU-Hawaii men (No. 6 NAIA) and women (No. 1 NAIA) all headed to postseason national tournaments. ---- The Hawaii Pacific softball team will take on Point Loma Nazarene in a first-round game of the NAIA Far West Regional tomorrow at Costa Mesa, Calif. The Sea Warriors (31-15), seeded third in the regional, are ranked 17th in the NAIA. Point Loma (33-14) is seeded fourth. ---- Garrett Gabriel, 29, has been named head boys' basketball coach at his alma mater, Maryknoll. Gabriel, the brother of St. Louis coach Darryl Gabriel, was a star for the Spartans and Pac-Five in the mid-80s and went on to play quarterback at the University of Hawaii. He assisted his brother at St. Louis this past season and was head coach at Radford for a single season prior to that. ---- Kamehameha rocked Punahou, 21-8, and St. Louis pounded UHS/HBA, 13-2, in ILH baseball double-elimination tournament games yesterday at Ala Wai Field. The Buffanblu and Jr.Bows/Eagles were eliminated from the tourney while Kamehameha will take on Mid-Pacific, and St. Louis will face Iolani in continuing action tomorrow. ---- Punahou finished the ILH girls basketball season at 11-1 after beating Kamehameha, 34-32, last night at Kekuhaupio Gym. The Warriors and University High finished in a second place tie with 8-4 records. Iolani ended up 6-6. ---- Noam Katz, the brother of UH great Yuval Katz, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of Hawaii. Katz, 21, is a 6-3 southpaw setter and is completing a three-year stint in the Israeli Army. He will enter UH as a freshman next fall. ---- Last weekend at Sacramento, Calif., Dennis Alexio beat Achille Roger of France with a fifth round TKO to retain his world heavyweight kickboxing title.
