** Wahine Dump Irish Again **
The University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team defeated Notre
Dame for the second night in a row, winning in three straight
games, 15-1, 15-9, 15-13, to the delight of 8,864 fans at the
Special Events Arena last night. Angelica Ljungquist knocked
down 15 kills and Joselyn Robins contributed 10 to lead the
Wahine (22-0), the nation's top-ranked team. The Fight Irish,
ranked 21st, dropped to 13-8.
** Bows-Falcons Today **
The UH football team (2-6) will take on Air Force (4-2) in a
Western Athletic Conference battle this morning at 8 a.m. HST at
the Air Force Academy, Colorado. Hawaii offensive coordinator
Guy Benjamin has challenged his offensive unit to "step-up and
play aggressively," something he says the players haven't done
consistently this season. And the Rainbows will certainly have
to step-up to have any kind of chance against the Falcons, who
went into to South Bend last weekend and upset nationally-ranked
Notre Dame. Oddsmakers have established Air Force as 34-point
favorites.
** Prep Football Report **
McKinley and Castle won Oahu Interscholastic Association first-
round football playoff games last night at Aloha Stadium. The
Tigers churned out 286 yards on the ground in a 29-7 triumph over
Roosevelt. McKinley now advances to a quarterfinal round match-up
against Farrington next week. Castle, sparked by Kaleo Hawn's
three touchdown passes, also advanced to the quarterfinals by
defeating Radford, 24-7 last night. The Knights will face
Campbell in the next round.
----
In the only other prep football score reported from last night,
Waimea routed Kapaa, 42-7, in a Kauai Interscholastic Federation
game last night at Vidinha Stadium.

** Rout of the Irish by Wahine **
Despite a lineup that includes six returning starters and 6-4 and
6-5 middle blockers, No. 21 Notre Dame was no match for top-
ranked Hawaii in a women's college volleyball match last night in
front of 7,291 fans at the Special Events Arena. The Wahine won
in three straight games, 15-5, 15-8, 15-2. UH coach Dave Shoji
characterized his team's seemingly effortless romp of the Irish
as "scary." Said Shoji: "They're a good team and we didn't have
much of a problem beating them." Outside hitters Therese
Crawford and Joselyn Robins each pounded 12 kills for Hawaii,
which won its 21st match of the season without a defeat. Notre
Dame fell to 13-7. The two teams will meet again tonight.
** UH Athletes Involved in Altercation **
University Hawaii athletes Aaron Curry (basketball), Quincy
Jacobs (football) and Moses Goods (volleyball) are the subject of
a UH investigation stemming from their involvement in a fight at
the UH dorms. According to allegations, Curry and Jacobs were
involved in an argument with Wahine volleyball player Cecilia
Goods early Sunday morning at the Hale Wainani student housing
complex. When Moses Goods stepped in to defend his sister, a
fight ensued leaving Moses Goods with two black eyes. At the
suggestion of UH men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton, Goods
pressed assault charges against Curry and Jacobs. A police
investigation is now underway.
** Playoff Wins for Kaiser, Leilehua **
Using two different methods, Kaiser and Leilehua surged to Oahu
Interscholastic Association football playoff victories last night
at Aloha Stadium. The Cougars took to the air, parlaying two
Grant Sato touchdown passes into a 21-7 win over Aiea. In an
earlier game, Leilehua used its powerful running attack to notch
a 28-7 victory over Mililani. Kaiser will take on Waianae and
Leilehua will meet Waipahu in quarterfinal round matchups next
week. First round action continues tonight with Radford squaring
off against Castle and McKinley challenging Roosevelt.

standings, the Chaminade women's volleyball team now sits atop
the Pacific West Conference with an 8-1 record. "They've become

** Olivera Lost for Season **
Shane Olivera, the best offensive lineman on the University of
Hawaii football team, will miss the rest of the season because of
a bone spur injury in his left heel. The former all-stater from
St. Louis High School said he will probably undergo surgery to
correct the problem. "It's kind of a tough decision, but I'm
looking toward my future," he said. The Rainbows (2-6) will
certainly miss the services of the 6-2, 280-pound Olivera,
particularly this weekend when they take on Air Force on the
road.

** Bows Rally to Rip Rebels **
Rallying from a 21-10 halftime deficit under humid, rain-soaked
conditions, the University of Hawaii defeated Nevada-Las Vegas
38-28 in a Western Athletic Conference football victory last
night at Aloha Stadium. A crowd of 20,475 was on hand to see the
Rainbows improve to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference. The
Rebels remain winless (0-8, 0-5). After calling some ill-
conceived trick plays in the first half, UH offensive coordinator
Guy Benjamin decided to keep things simple, sticking to basic
dives, traps, and sweeps. The plan worked as the Rainbows
amassed 350 yards on the ground. Halfback Russell Grant did most
of the damage, netting 144 yards on 14 carries, including a 66-
yard sprint to paydirt at the start of the fourth quarter to give
the Rainbows a 31-21 lead. Hawaii will travel to Colorado
Springs this weekend to take on Air Force, which upset Notre Dame
20-17 in overtime yesterday at South Bend.
** Wahine 20-0 **
Angelica Ljungquist and Therese Crawford each slammed 11 kills to
spark the top-ranked UH Wahine to a 15-1, 15-9, 15-9 Western

Colorado. The largest crowd to ever watch an Air Force women's
game, 1,193, was in attendance. UH improved to 20-0 overall and

** Wahine Romp Rebels **
A crowd of 1,251, most rooting for the visiting team, watched the
top-ranked University of Hawaii Wahine cruise to an easy 15-2,
15-8, 15-0 Western Athletic Conference triumph over host Nevada-
Las Vegas last night in Las Vegas. "It was pretty loud," said UH
coach Dave Shoji. "I think three quarters of the people were
rooting for us." Angelica Ljungquist registered 11 kills and
Therese Crawford contributed 8 more for the Wahine (19-0 overall,
8-0 conference). No player had more than four kills for the
Rebels (4-11, 2-3), who are coached by former UH Wahine great
Dietre Collins.
** Rainbows, Rebels Clash Tonight **
It'll be a battle of two struggling football teams tonight at

team, ranked first in the NAIA, crushed No. 12 Hawaii Pacific,
15-3, 15-2, 15-2, in front of a home crowd of 1,318 at the Cannon
Activities Center. The victory upped the Seasiders' season
record to 20-0, extended their winning streak to 46, and gave
them the homecourt advantage over the Sea Warriors in the best-
of-three postseason playoffs. HPU dropped to 14-5.

** Wahine in Vegas **
Deitre Collins is one of the best players to ever don a
University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball uniform. An All-American
at UH in the 80s, Collins, now the first-year head coach at
Nevada-Las Vegas, will have the tough task of watching her Lady
Rebels (4-10) take on the 1996 edition of the UH Wahine (17-0)
in a Western Athletic Conference match tonight in Las Vegas.
"It'll be an eye-opener for my team," admitted Collins. "I want
to see Deidre do well," said UH coach Dave Shoji. "It'll be
difficult to go in and try to beat her this time."
** Grid Bows Face Beatable Foe **
The UH football team will shoot for its second win of the season
tomorrow night at Aloha Stadium when the Rainbows (1-6) take on
Nevada-Las Vegas (0-7) in a WAC match-up. Despite enduring a
tough 1996 campaign, the Rainbows can take some consolation that
at least one other team is struggling even more. The Rebels have
had difficulty stopping opposing offenses and are ranked last
nationally in four defensive categories. Oddsmakers have
established the 'Bows as 13-point favorites.

** Wahine Top Aztecs **
After losing the first game, the top-ranked University of Hawaii
Wahine settled down to win the next three to notch a 13-15, 15-5,
15-7, 15-11 Western Athletic Conference volleyball victory over
San Diego State last night at a packed Peterson Gym on the SDSU
campus. Two weeks ago at the Special Events Arena, the Wahine
routed the Aztecs with ease. However, last night was no gimme.
"It was a good win because we knew San Diego State was a better
team than it showed in Hawaii," said UH coach Dave Shoji, whose
team improved to 18-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
Angelica Ljungquist hammered 23 kills, and Therese Crawford and
Cecilia Goods added 15 and 14, respectively, to pace Hawaii.
SDSU, rated by coaches as the second-best team in the WAC, fell
to 10-8 and 3-2.

** Donations for UH Sports Roll In **
Governor Ben Cayetano announced that he has solicited nearly a
half-million dollars in donations for the financially-strapped
University of Hawaii athletic department. Cayetano said he has
garned contributions of $125,000 from Honolulu businessman Toshio
Bob Nagatani, $100,000 from an anonymous retailer, and $50,000
each from Panda Travel, former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi, Bank of
Hawaii, and First Hawaiian Bank. "This is only the beginning,"
said Cayetano. "The response has been tremendous." The governor
will host a fund-raising event tonight at Washington Place.
** UH Seniors Still Spirited **
A winning season and the glory that goes with it gone, the
seniors on the University of Hawaii football team are keeping
their proverbial heads up for the last half of nightmarish
season. "It's a reality that we're not winning," said senior
offensive lineman C.B. Wentling, "but I'm reaping rewards from
this, even if they're smaller than what most people from more
successful teams are getting." Noting that many of his high
school teammates never had a chance to play football in college,
kicker Carlton Oswalt added, "I feel totally privileged to be
where I am right now." Quarterback Glenn Freitas was
philosophical: "At least we can be a part of building the
foundation. That's something to be proud of." The Rainbows, 1-6
overall and 0-4 in the Western Athletic Conference, will take on
Nevada-Las Vegas on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.
** Sports Shorts **
UH-Hilo basketball coach Jim Farnum announced that 7-foot center

** Wahine Hoopsters Have Depth **
Blessed with outstanding depth, the UH Wahine basketball team
will be shooting for another 20+ win season in 1996-97. Leading
the Wahine are forward Nani Cockett, center Kendis Leeburg, and
guards B.J. Itoman and Tiffany Fujimoto. According to UH coach
Vince Goo, only Leeburg has a firm lock on a starting position.
Making bids for playing time are a host of other players,
including Brandi Ashby (6-2 forward), Liisa Kotilainen (5-8
guard), Raylene Howard (5-11 forward), Hedy Liu (5-11 forward),
Sutton Helvey (6-2 forward) and Maj Forsberg (5-4 guard). Goo
said he likely go with a platoon system like he did in 1991 when
the Wahine went 25-7 and reached the championship game of the NIT
Tournament.
** Wahine Still the One **
The UH women's volleyball team continues to occupy the top spot

all 59 first place votes. Florida (19-1), Stanford (14-1), Long
Beach State (18-0), and Penn State (16-1) round out the top five.
The Wahine will play three matches on the mainland in the next
four days. They will take on San Diego State (10-7) tonight,
UNLV (4-10) on Friday, and Air Force (2-11) on Saturday.
** UH Special Teams Hurting **
UH football coach Fred vonAppen said the play of his special
teams have been less than adequate this season. VonAppen
remarked that poor play has led to long punt returns for
touchdowns and less than ideal field position for the Rainbow
offense. Not one to mince words, vonAppen evaluated the execution
of the Rainbows' special teams as follows: "Shit happens."
VonAppen has assigned assistant coaches Trent Miles, Tom
Williams, Don Dillon, and Ken Margerum to give special teams
coach Doug Semones a hand. "Any extra help will be helpful,"
said Semones, the former Kahuku High School coach.

** Wahine Whip Wyoming **
The top-ranked University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team
improved to 16-0 overall and 5-0 in the Western Athletic
Conference after easily topping Wyoming, 15-2, 15-2, 15-5, in
front of a Special Events Arena crowd of 6,793 last night.
"It was obvious that our team was very intimidated by Hawaii
before we even stepped on the court," said Wyoming coach Susan
Steadman, whose Cowgirls fell to 8-10 and 2-2. Angelica
Ljungquist led an imposing Hawaii attack with 18 kills and 10
digs. The senior captain's 10 blocks also helped her break
Suzanne Eagye's career block mark of 502. Tonight, the Wahine
will host Colorado State (12-5 and 2-2) in another WAC match.
** "Mediocre" Bows Romped **
Hawaii was on the short end of 56-8 score in a Western Athletic
Conference football game against San Diego State last night at
Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. The Aztecs topped the Rainbows
in all phases of the game, amassing 427 yards in total offense,
limiting Hawaii to just 205 total yards, and dominating special
teams play. "They outplayed us," said Rainbow defensive lineman
Brian Chapman. "The way it looked was the way it was. We can't
keep letting this happen. We have to play above mediocre."
Hawaii fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference. SDSU
improved to 3-1 and 1-0.
** Lanikai Favored in Channel Race **
Defending champion Lanikai is a slight favorite to win tomorrow's
Molokai Hoe, a 41-mile Hawaiian outrigger canoe race from
Molokai's Hale O Lono Harbor to Oahu's Duke Kahanamoku Beach in
Waikiki. The windward Oahu club, which returns all nine paddlers
from its 1995 championship crew, received a dash of reality when
it placed sixth in Skippy Kamakawiwoole distance race a few weeks
ago. "That probably was the best thing that could have happened
to us," said Lanikai coach Gale Berengue. "It got everybody re-
focused." Also making strong bids for the channel title will be
Dana Point from California, Faa'a from Tahiti, and Outrigger and
Waikiki Surf Club from Oahu.

** Shaq-led Lakers Triumph **
A Special Events Arena sellout crowd of 10,225 was on hand last
night to see 7-foot-1 center Shaquille O'Neal score 25 points and
grab 12 rebounds to spark the Los Angeles Lakers to a 111-101 NBA
pre-season victory over the Denver Nuggets. O'Neal made the most
of his Laker debut, scoring almost at will inside, limiting
Nugget centers Ervin Johnson and Ed Stokes to a combined 0-for-8
shooting from the field, and leading the crowd in cheers in the
fourth quarter which he did not play in. Said Laker coach Del
Harris: "Anybody here who thinks Shaquille O'Neal is just a tall
guy who plays basketball got an education." According to O'Neal,
just 24, "I just want to come in here and do my role. The
comraderie on this team is very good. I think I can have some
fun here." The Lakers and Nuggets will meet again tomorrow

** Yamashitas Sisters Shine **
With volleyball playing parents, it should be no surprise that
the Yamashita sisters can play volleyball. And play it well.
Big sister Nalani is a starting backrow specialist for the top-
ranked University of Hawaii Wahine, middle sister Twaila is the
starting setter for Hawaii Pacific of the NAIA, and baby sister
Tania plays for No. 17 UC-Santa Barbara. Their late father,
Thomas, and their mother, Norinne Quinsaat, were active on the
local volleyball circuit and often brought their daughters to
matches. Nalani and her Wahine teammates will take on Wyoming in
a Western Athletic Conference match tonight at the Special Events

is the one that is getting better and better each week. Hawaii
is getting better."

** A Hundred-plus Crews To Challenge Channel **
A record number 105 crews will compete this Sunday in 41-mile
Molokai Hoe canoe race from Hale O Lono Harbor on Molokai to Duke
Kahanamoku Beach fronting the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.
Ninety crews, including defending champion Lanikai, were entered
in last year's race. Lanikai paddler John Foti expressed concern
about the large field. "It's good to have all these people
willing and interested," he said, "but if there's going to be a
three- to four-hour gap between crews, I think you might have to
start thinking of other ways to do it." Molokai Hoe director
Joan Malama said the race committee will consider limiting the
number of entries next year if problems arise on Sunday. Several
crews complained last year because crowded conditions led to
bumping and collisions at the start of the race.
** Lakers Talented, says Magic **
The current crop of the Los Angeles Lakers could be the best
collection of players in franchise history. So says former Laker
Earvin "Magic" Johnson, here in Honolulu to watch tonight's
preseason match-up between the Lakers and the Denver Nuggets at
the Special Events Arena. Now retired and a part-owner of the
club, Johnson believes this year's team is something special.
"One through 12, this team is more talented than even the teams I
played on." He said that with players like Shaquille O'Neal,
Nick Van Exel, Eldon Campbell, Cedric Ceballos, and Kobe Bryant,
the Lakers "have more guys who can finish on a break. Now they
have to become a team like we were. If they do, they can be
great."

** Bows, Aztecs to Meet on Friday **
The University of Hawaii football team will take on San Diego
State on Friday night at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego despite
the Aztecs' offer to change the game to Saturday as originally
scheduled. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said that a change
of plans at this late date would mean paying penalties for flight
and hotel cancellations and securing alternate transportation.
The game was bumped up a day because of a possible scheduling
conflict with the San Diego Padres, who qualified for the
postseason baseball playoffs. Since the Padres were ousted in
the first round, Jack Murphy Stadium became available again.
UH coach Fred vonAppen has been grumbling about the abbreviated
period of time his team has to prepare for the Aztec game.
However, according to SDSU athletic director Rick Bay, "nobody in
Hawaii's camp should complain" because he has offered to return
the game to Saturday.

** Bows Lose Again **
The University of Hawaii football team fell to 1-5 overall and 0-
3 in the Western Athletic Conference following a 28-16 loss to
Colorado State on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. CSU, two-time
defending WAC champions, improved to 3-3 and 2-0. The Rainbows
played well in the first two quarters and trailed 21-16 at the
half. However, the Rams picked up the defensive intensity in the
second half, shutting down a ground-hugging UH offense. Said UH
coach Fred vonAppen: "We're not a very good team yet. We have
flashes of brilliance, but we can't sustain a good enough playing
level to win a football game. We're 1-5 and that's about what
we've earned." Next up for the Rainbows is a road game at San

the top-ranked University of Hawaii women's volleyball team, who
defeated San Diego State, 15-12, 15-5, 15-9, in a Western

A crowd of 7,963 was on hand to see the Wahine improve to 15-0

give Hawaii the most problems in the WAC this year, provided meek
resistance last night. "They kicked our butts," said SDSU coach

** SDSU Will Pay for 'Bow Charter **
Because of a last minute change in playing dates, San Diego State
University said it will foot the bill for a charter flight to
California for the UH football team next week. The WAC football
contest between the Aztecs and Rainbows had been scheduled for
Saturday, October 12, at Jack Murphy Stadium but had to be re-
scheduled to the day before because the San Diego Padres baseball
team, which has a contractual priority, may have a postseason
playoff game that day. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said it
will cost SDSU about $150,000 to fly the 85-member Rainbow
contingent to San Diego and back via charter. The usual round-
trip cost on a commercial flight is about $40,000. Meanwhile,
the Rainbows are preparing for tomorrow night's game at Aloha
Stadium against Colorado State. "Too much is being made over (the
San Diego State date switch)," said UH coach Fred vonAppen.
"Right now we have to think about Colorado State."
** Wahine-Aztecs Tonight **
The top-ranked University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team will
play unranked San Diego State in a Western Athletic Conference
match tonight at the Special Events Arena. The Wahine are 14-0
overall and 3-0 in the conference while the Aztecs are 8-6 and
1-0. Wahine middle blockers Cia Goods and Angelica Ljungquist
are among the leaders in several WAC statistical categories.
Goods is hitting .529 in WAC matches. Ljungquist has averages of
.419 in hitting, 1.78 blocks per game, and 4.72 kills per game.
** Swords Pierce Vulcans **
A crowd of about 200 was on hand at McCabe Gym to watch Chaminade
defeat UH-Hilo, 15-10, 15-9, 12-15, 15-7, in a women's small
college volleyball match. The Silverswords improved to 11-5
overall and 3-0 in the PacWest Conference. The Vulcans dropped
to 4-8 and 0-3. Danielle Robins slammed 19 kills to lead
Chaminade. Also playing well were setter Karlen Porter and
middle blocker Boo Arnold, starters on Kamehameha's state
championship girls' team last season. The match also featured a
showdown between coaches Sharon Peterson of UHH and Glennie Adams
and Tanya Fuamatu of Chaminade. Adams and Fuamatu played for
Peterson at Hilo.
** High School Football **
Top-ranked St. Louis (3-0) will take on No. 4 Kamehameha tonight

** Fasi Donates $50K **
Former Honolulu mayor Frank Fasi has offered to make a $50,000
donation to the University of Hawaii football program. UH coach
Fred vonAppen confirmed that he had spoken by phone with Fasi
yesterday and that the offer was genuine. According to vonAppen,
Fasi stipulated that the money must go directly to the football
program and must not have any strings attached. Fasi also said
that when he first made the offer to UH officials, he received no
response, hence the direct call to vonAppen. "This is a very
magnanimous gesture on his part," said vonAppen. "We're most
appreciative. I'm very embarrassed that we didn't respond
sooner."
** Wahine-Aztec Showdown Tomorrow **
The top-ranked University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team (14-0)
will square off against Western Athletic Conference foe San Diego
State tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. Despite a less
than sparkling 8-6 record, the Aztecs are rated as the WAC team
most likely to give the Wahine a battle this season. UH coach
Dave Shoji attributed SDSU's woes to a tough early season
schedule (the Aztecs played have eight ranked teams on the road
so far) and an injury to its top player, Jennifer Hamilton, the
WAC co-player of the year in 1995. "They line up players pretty
much the same way we do," said Shoji, who enters the match with a
604-121 win-loss record. "It's like looking at ourselves."
** Local Architect Helps Pitcher Make Hall **
Due to the efforts of Honolulu architect Maurice Kondo, former
New York Yankee pitcher Larry Gowell will be recognized in the
baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Gowell only a
had a five-week career in the Big Leagues but will be recognized
because on October 4, 1972, he is credited with the last hit as
an American League pitcher before the designated hitter rule was
put into effect. Kondo, a sports memorabilia collector in his
spare time, researched and documented the feat and submitted his
findings to the baseball Hall.

** No Change in AJA **
Team managers from Oahu's Americans of Japanese Ancestry (AJA)
baseball league yesterday voted unanimously to maintain the
organization's current eligibility requirement which stipulates
that a player must be Japanese or part-Japanese to participate.
The vote was called for because former University of Hawaii
player Bill Blanchette, of French-Canadian extraction, had
expressed an interest in playing in the AJA league. "I expected
(the decision)," said a disappointed Blanchette. "I respect it,
but I disagree with it." AJA president Homer Sheldon said the
unanimous vote surprised him. "I thought there might be some
objections by some of the managers," he said. Blanchette, who
questioned the legality of allowing a racially-exclusive league
to use city parks, said he doesn't plan to pursue the matter in
court. "I'm not an attacking kind of guy," said Blanchette.
** UH Seeks Bid **
The University of Hawaii athletic department put out a call for
bids for exclusive television rights to broadcast Rainbow sports.
Bids must be tendered by October 25 and guarantee a minimum of
$750,000 a year and that broadcasts be available to 80 percent of
Hawaii's television households and to at least a million TV
households west of the Rocky Mountains. Oceanic Cablevision,
which recently laid a $1.2 million offer on the table, and KFVE,
the current broadcast rights holder, are the leading candidates
to land the new contract.
** Former Wahine Hoopster to Finland **
Hard-charging UH Wahine basketball player Tania Brunton has come
to an agreement to play professionally in Finland. Hawaii's
leading scorer last season, Brunton said she's glad to have a
chance to play for pay. "I've been waiting all this time. I
didn't think I'd be going anywhere," she said. A 5-11 forward,
Brunton, a native of New Zealand, last spring received the Jack
Bonham award, given to the top scholar-athlete at UH. She also
earned a bachelor's degree in recreation in May.
** Small College Volleyball News **
Sharon Peterson will tangle with two of her former players when
UH-Hilo takes on Chaminade in a women's small college volleyball
match tomorrow night at McCabe Gym. Peterson's UHH Vulcans have
struggled and are 4-7 this season. On the other hand, Chaminade
(10-5), led by head coach Glennie Adams and assistant Tanya
Fuamatu, both products of Peterson's Vulcan program, are doing
well. "Even though I want to beat them, I cannot help but feel
proud for them," admitted Peterson. "I guess you could say it's
all part of the Vulcan tradition."
----
BYUH middle blocker Arlete Silva was named the Hawaii
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the week. Only a
freshman, Silva had a total of 24 kills, seven blocks, and two
aces in a pair of matches against Chaminade last week.

Because a sponsor flaked out, the First Pitch baseball tournament
will not be held this season. The tournament, scheduled for
January, was supposed to include UH, Miami, Texas, and Louisiana
State. However, AdCraft Association, the tournament sponsor,
withdrew its financial backing because of change in ownership.
----
Hawaii surfers Sunny Garcia and Ross Williams moved into the
third round of the Coca-Cola Figueira Pro after second round
triumphs yesterday in Portugal. A quartet of other Hawaii
surfers--John Shimooka, Conan Hayes, Kalani Robb, and Shane
Dorian--will compete in the second round today.
----
Because of a scheduling conflict, the UH football team will take
on San Diego State on Friday, October 11, instead of Saturday,
October 12 as originally planned. The game site, Jack Murphy
Stadium, has been reserved for a possible San Diego Padre
baseball playoff game on 10/12, necessitating the switch. UH
coach Fred vonAppen expressed his displeasure with the change
since the Rainbows will only have four days to prepare for the
game instead of five. UH will host Colorado State this Saturday
at Aloha Stadium while San Diego State has a bye.
----
The UH Wahine (15-0) maintained their position atop both the
Volleyball Magazine and USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Polls. Hawaii will
take on unranked San Diego State (8-6) in a Western Athletic
Conference match on Friday night at the Special Events Arena.

** Seasider Wahine No. 1 **
After starting the season as the 13th-ranked team, the BYU-Hawaii
Wahine moved into the top position of the NAIA Volleyball
Rankings yesterday. The Seasiders, two-time defending NAIA title
winners, are 15-0 this season and won 41 consecutive matches
dating back to 1995. "Now I can remind them they are the No. 1
team," said BYUH coach Wilfred Navalta. "I'm going to expect
them to train and play like the No. 1 team. The good thing is
we've been there before. I'm sure the girls will take it all in
stride." The Seasiders will host UH-Hilo on Friday and Saturday
at Cannon Activities Center in Laie. Hawaii Pacific, which takes
to road this weekend for the Western Oregon State Tournament,
moved from 15th to 8th in the NAIA poll.
** Hawaii Surf Team Set **
A team from Hawaii will compete at the World Amateur Surfing
Championships at Huntington Beach, Calif. this weekend. Melanie
Bartels, a 14-year-old freshman at Waianae High School, is
expected to be one of the top competitors in the Women's Open and
bodyboard competitions. Other members of Team Hawaii are Andy
Irons, Bruce Irons, Jason Bogle, Dayton Segundo, Macy Mullen
(junior men), Gavin Sutherland, Mikala Jones, Eddie Cheplic, Mike
Hubbard (open men), Yvette Bertleman (open women), Chris Gagnon,
Tyson Okazaki (men's bodyboard), Lee James Hao (men's longboard),
and David Shinbara (kneeboard).
** Ljungquist Honored **
UH Wahine Angelica Ljungquist was named the Western Athletic
Conference Pacific Division volleyball player of the week
yesterday. A 6-2 senior middle blocker from Sweden, Ljungquist
amassed 33 kills, 12 blocks, and 16 digs in Wahine victories over
USC and Utah last week. Ljungquist and her Hawaii teammates will
host San Diego State in a WAC game this Friday at the Special
Events Arena. UH is 14-0 and ranked first in the NCAA.

** Tenth Channel Win for Offshore **
Paddlers from California-based Offshore Canoe Club made the 41-
mile crossing of the Kaiwi Channel in 6 hours, 46 minutes, 33
seconds to win 1996 Na Wahine O Ke Kai yesterday. Under nearly
cloudless skies and with a faint trace of wind, Offshore paddled
to their 10th Channel victory. Their winning time was the third
slowest in the history of the race that begins at Molokai's Hale
O Lono Harbor and ends at Waikiki's Duke Kahanamoku Beach. "It
was like a lake out there," said Offshore's JoJo Toeppner. "But
we did what we had to do to win." Australia finished second,
just over five minutes behind Offshore. Outrigger, a co-favorite
entering the race, was the first Hawaii club to cross the line,
finishing third overall in 6:52:03. Said Outrigger's Kisi Haine,
"It just didn't work for us today. It's very disappointing."

** VonAppen: We're Getting Better **
Despite a 1-4 record, the University of Hawaii football is
getting better, at least according to head coach Fred vonAppen.
"We can't have this enormous preoccupation with winning or
losing," said the UH coach. "That's the media's job." VonAppen
insists that in order for his highly touted West Coast Offense to
work, the Rainbows need to be able to establish a ground game.
"We've been totally inept running the ball," he admitted.
"Running the ball is no science. You block people and you run."
VonAppen did commend his players for remaining positive despite
the losses. "The guys are working hard. They're playing hard.
They're just not playing very well. We have to coach better and
they need to play better." The Rainbows will host Colorado State
this Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
