Seemingly in control with a 5-0 lead and with ace pitcher Mark Johnson on the mound entering the seventh inning, the Rainbows had to struggle for a victory after the Bears rallied to tie the score in that frame. In the eighth, Jason Ross drew a bases-loaded walk to push across Jody Napuunoa for the winning run. Freshman southpaw Randon Ho came on in relief of Johnson to earn the victory. The Rainbows (7-6) and the Bears (7-4) play game two of their three-game series this afternoon. Wahine Steak Ends Santa Barbara defeated Hawaii 57-49 in a women's Big West Conference basketball game last night in Santa Barbara, thus ending the Wahine's 16-game winning streak. Hawaii led 49-43 with less than six minutes remaining to play but went scoreless the rest of way. "It was one of those nights when the ball just didn't go in," said UH coach Vince Goo, who saw his team fall to 18-3 overall and 12-1 in the conference. The Gauchos improved to 18-5 and 13-1. Hawaii's top two scorers, Tania Brunton (7) and Nani Cockett (11), were held to just 18 between them on 5 of 24 shooting. Four Tied in Hawaiian Open Enduring strong trade winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, four golfers are tied for the lead after two rounds of play in the Hawaiian Open at the Waialae Country Club. Russ Cochran (66), Steve Stricker (70), Brad Fabel (70), and Jim Furyk (71) are tied for the top spot with scores of 5-under-par 139. "The conditions are pretty tough," said Stricker. "It's been blowing and it's been hard to keep the ball in the fairway." Hawaii's David Ishii, penalized a stroke for slow play, just made the cut with a two-round total of 147. The tournament continues today and concludes tomorrow. All-ILH State Soccer Final Tonight at Aloha Stadium, Punahou and Iolani will meet for the third time this season, but on this go-round the Hawaii High School Athletic Association boys' soccer title will be on the line. In last night's semifinals, ILH champion Punahou edged Mililani 1-0, and Iolani defeated OIA title-holder Kalaheo 2-1. Tau Moe scored the game-winner for the Buffanblu in the 66th minute while the Raiders advanced by outshooting the Mustangs 4-3 in a sudden death overtime kickoff. In the two previous matches between Iolani (12-2-2) and Punahou (10-1-3) this season, the Raiders hold a 1-0-1 advantage. OIA Final Four Set Kahuku, Campbell, Moanalua, and Kalaheo won in the OIA Boys Basketball Tournament quarterfinals yesterday at Blaisdell Arena. The teams now advance to the league semifinals next Thursday at Blaisdell and also have earned state tournament berths. Yesterday, Kahuku downed Radford 42-33, Campbell edged Kaiser 49- 47, Moanalua routed Nanakuli 73-35, and Kalaheo topped Mililani 72-58. In next week's semifinals, Kahuku will meet Campbell, and Kalaheo will face Moanalua. Yesterday's losers will play off for the league's fifth state tournament spot. ---- The ILH teams concluded their regular season last night with three games. Iolani nipped University High 44-43, Punahou whipped Kamehameha 58-41, and Damien beat Maryknoll 65-60. St. Louis had already clinched the league title and earned the first of the league's two state tournament berths. The six other teams will enter a playoff tournament for the second berth. == Final ILH Basketball Standings == St. Louis 10-2, Punahou, Iolani 9-3, Kamehameha, University 5-7, Damien 3-9, Maryknoll 1-11. Sports Shorts The UH men will take on Brigham Young in Western Athletic Conference basketball game tonight at Provo, Utah. The Bows (7-14 overall and 4-9 in the WAC) are coming off a 69-59 loss to Utah on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Cougars (14-9 and 8-6) downed San Diego State 81-68 in their last game. ---- The rematch between the No. 1 UH men's volleyball team and No. 2 Long Beach State is set for tonight at the Special Events Arena. On Thursday, the Bows won the first match in four hard-fought games. ---- No. 2 Hawaii Pacific defeated No.12 BYU-Hawaii, 66-58, in a big NAIA men's basketball game last night at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie. Juergen Malbeck (16 points), Llewellyn Smalley (14) and Steve Richey (14) paced the Sea Warriors (24-3). Paualasi Matavao led BYUH (19-6) with 11 points. The Rainbows improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The airways fell to 7-1 and 4-1. A major factor in the victory was the serving of the Rainbow, which netted 14 aces, including seven by setter Eric Pichel, who single-handedly propelled Hawaii to a 14-13 lead in the critical fourth game with three consecutive aces. Meanwhile, Katz played with his usual brilliance, amassing 40 kills, 5 blocks, 11 digs, and 2 aces. The Rainbows played the match without starting middle blocker Jason Ring, who sprained an ankle on practice on Wednesday. He will probably miss tomorrow's rematch with LBSU. No Go For Slow Bows Using a close-to-the-vest slowdown tactics, the UH men's basketball team stayed close to Utah before withering in the 4,400 foot altitude of Salt Lake City last night. The Utes won 69-59. "The time was right for an upset," said UH coach Riley Wallace, "but we didn't have our legs when we needed them. We were too tired." The Rainbows, following Wallace's order to milk at least 15 seconds off the shot clock before looking to shoot, trailed by just seven with nine minutes left. Turnovers and poor shooting down the stretch doomed the Bows, who fell to 7-14 overall and 4-9 in the Western Athletic Conference. The league-leading Utes improved to 20-4 and 12-2. Levi Leads Hawaii Open Former-champion Wayne Levi fired a 5-under 67 to grab a one- stroke lead in the opening round of the 31st Hawaiian Open yesterday at a breezy and sometimes rainy Waialae Country Club. Jim Furyk and Scott Simpson shot 68's to trail by one while a the foursome of Brad Fabel, Jay Don Blake, Steve Stricker, and Ted Tryba are at 69. Hawaii's David Ishii and Greg Mayer fired 74's. The second round of the 72-hole tournament will be played today. Four Left in Boys' State Soccer Four Oahu teams, two from the OIA and two from the ILH, advanced to the semifinals of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Tournament by winning quarterfinal matches yesterday at Aloha Stadium. Tioni Hackney scored two goals as ILH champ Punahou blitzed Kahuku 6-0. John Schlieman scored late in the second half in Iolani's 1-0 nail-biter over Maui. Mililani weathered nine second-half shots on goal in a 1-0 win over Waiakea. OIA kingpin Kalaheo, playing most of the second half short-handed, still managed to beat Konawaena 2-1. The Mustangs will play Iolani in one semifinal tonight while Punahou will take on Mililani in the other. Prep Basketball Mililani, Radford, Kaiser, and Nanakuli were all winners as the OIA Boys Basketball tournament got underway yesterday at Blaisdell Arena. The Trojans rallied for a 44-41 win over Roosevelt; the Rams ripped Castle 73-47; Kaiser topped Aiea 47- 37; and Nanakuli nipped Kaimuki 72-71. The league's top four teams enter the fray today after opening round byes. Defending league and state champ Kalaheo will face Mililani, Kahuku will square off against Radford, Moanalua will take on Nanakuli, and West champ Campbell will battle Kaiser. Sports Shorts The UH Wahine basketball team (18-2) takes on UC-Santa Barbara (17-5) tonight in California. Hawaii, ranked 34th in the country, is riding a 16-game winning streak. ---- The UH baseball team (6-6) hosts California (7-3) in the first game of a three-game set tonight at Rainbow Stadium. The Bows will send Mark Johnson to the mound. ---- The UH Wahine softball team (1-1) will host UH-Hilo (1-1), Hawaii Pacific (2-0), and Chaminade (0-2) in the seventh Annual Pre- season Classic, which starts today at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. ---- Six Hawaii surfers advanced to the third round of the Billabong Pro in 3- to 5-foot surf at Burleigh Heads, Australia. Still in competition for the meet's $14,000 top prize are Derek Ho, Sunny Garcia, Kalani Robb, Kaipo Jaquias, Ross Williams, and Shane Dorian. ---- Notre Dame-bound Jason Ching of Punahou was named to the Schutt Sports Group High School All-American team yesterday. The Buffanblu defensive tackle was one of 100 players nationwide chosen for the elite team. ---- It was a tough day in the cold North for two Hawaii small college basketball teams. Alaska-Anchorage thumped Chaminade 88-63 and Alaska-Fairbanks outscored UH-Hilo 118-95. The Silverswords fell to 4-18 and the Vulcans dropped to 8-14. Over 100 of the PGA tour's top professionals, including nine past champions, are here vying for the $216,000 top prize in the 72-hole event. John Morse is the defending champion. Bad Boy Bows Face Utes Attempting to shake the thug-like image projected upon them by past physical altercations, the UH men's basketball team will take on Utah in a Western Athletic Conference game tonight at Salt Lake City. The Bows will be without its top warrior, Justice Sueing, who has been suspended for the game for viciously elbowing Utah forward Keith Van Horn in a WAC game last March. What's more, in the first game between the two teams earlier this season, Rainbow center Seth Sundberg head-butted a Ute player in retaliation for a foul. Cries of thuggery were sounded by the Utah press corps. "We've spent a lot of time talking about (the incidents)," said UH coach Riley Wallace. The Seasiders, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, will start 6-10, 265-pound Ionatana Enosa at center, 6-9, 265-pound Paulasi Taulava at power forward, and 6-7, 220-pound Paulasi Matavao at small forward against the No. 2 Sea Warriors. "When the three of us are in the game at the same time, we're tough," said Matavao. "I don't know why anybody would want to come inside against us." Prep Soccer Oahu teams won three of four games on the opening day of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Boys State Soccer Tournament yesterday at Aloha Stadium. Under overcast and blustery conditions, Kahuku shut out Parker 5-0, Mililani edged Waimea 2-1, Iolani beat Pearl City 2-0, and Konawaena topped Aiea 4-1. In today's quarterfinal round, BIIF champ Waiakea will meet Mililani, MIL kingpin Maui High will square off against Iolani, ILH champ Punahou will take on Kahuku, and OIA top dog Kalaheo will face Konawaena. ---- The Iolani girls kept their state tournament hopes alive by defeating Punahou 1-0 in a special playoff game yesterday at Kapiolani Park. The victory clinched second place in the ILH for the Raiders, who will face Seabury Hall on Saturday morning at Aloha Stadium with the winner earning a state tourney berth. Sports Shorts The UH baseball team will host California in a three-game series that begins with a single game tomorrow night at Rainbow Stadium. The 6-6 Rainbows just completed a 3-game set against UCLA last weekend, won by the Bruins 2 to 1. California, with a pitching staff that carries an impressive 2.63 ERA, comes to the Islands with a 7-3 record. ---- The UH Wahine are ranked 34th in the most recent USA Today-CNN College Women's Basketball Poll. Georgia, Louisiana Tech, and Stanford are ranked first through third. ---- The UH Wahine volleyball team will make a 10-day training trip to Japan beginning March 22. All-America middle-blocker Angelica Ljungquist is in a cast while recovering from stress fracture in her left foot. She plans to make the trip. ---- The Hawaii Pacific baseball team (1-4) will end a month of inactivity with five games in three days next week in California. The Sea Warriors play doubleheaders with Albertson and Concordia next Monday and Tuesday and a single game against Azusa Pacific on Wednesday. ---- Running back Danny Crowell rushed for 130 yards on 26 carries to lead the Maui Stars to a 3-0 triumph over the Waianae Fighting Hawaiians in the championship game of the Hawaii Football League Sunday at War Memorial Stadium. The award was chosen by a panel of judges from Sports Illustrated, USA Today, NBC Sports, and several other media sources. Wadkins Wins Shootout Lanny Wadkins defeated a field of eleven other pro golfers to win the Johnny Bellinger Shootout at the Waialae Country Club yesterday. The mini tournament, where two golfers with the high scores are eliminated on each hole, is a preliminary event for the Hawaiian Open, which runs tomorrow through Sunday at Waialae. Wadkins earned $5,500 for the victory. The tournament's top four seeds--Punahou, Kalaheo, Maui, and Waiakea--have drawn byes into Thursday's quarterfinals. Zivanovic, a 6-11 first-year player is forced into action because Sueing must sit out the contest as punishment for elbowing Utah forward Keith Van Horn last in the WAC tournament final last March. "It's going to be a test for us to see how strong we are as a team," said Rainbow guard Tes Whitlock. " 'J' is very important to our team. It's going to be tough without him." Bows Night Owls? Given the choice, UH baseball coach would rather have his team play at night instead of day. He has a point, for his Bows are 5-1 this season in games played after sunset. The Rainbows' record for day games, however, is just 1-5. Hawaii will face the Golden Bears of California in a three-game series at Rainbow Rainbow Stadium beginning on Friday. The win gave the Bruins a 2-1 edge in the three-game series. Yesterday, UCLA hitters, particularly Nick Theodorou, feasted on Rainbow pitching. Theodorou, entering the game as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded in the sixth, ripped a bases-clearing double to propel the Bruins to an 8-5 lead. He also doubled in the seventh for another RBI. Darren Blakely and Robert Medeiros homered for Hawaii (6-6), which now must prepare for a three-game series against California this weekend. New Life for Bows? After whipping a good Fresno State club 97-76 on Saturday night, the UH men's basketball team may have brighter days ahead. Saddled with a 7-13 record and dreams of a WAC regular-season title long gone, the Bows look to secure a favorable spot as possible for the upcoming Conference post season tournament. "Yes," said Hawaii center Seth Sundberg, who scored 13 points and snagged 6 rebounds. "This is how it should have been all season." Justice Sueing led the Rainbow scorers with 25 points. Tes Whitlock and Alika Smith added 18 each, and Anthony Harris chipped in 17. Whitlock also dished out 11 assists. No. 1 Vball Bows Cruise A match that was supposed to rival a shaving cream commercial for closeness turned out to be a romp as the top-ranked UH men's volleyball team crushed No. 2 UC-Santa Barbara 15-7, 15-13, 15-5, last night before a capacity crowd of 2,435 at UCSB gym. The Main man Yuval Katz pounded 30 kills to spark a dominating Rainbow effort while a supporting cast of Jason Ring (14), Naveh Milo (14), Aaron Wilton, and Sivan Leoni (12) each contributed double-figure kill totals. "It was a highly polished act tonight," said UH coach Mike Wilton. "We were prepared and were focused. They answered the call." Bruins Bounce Baseball Bows UCLA pounded Hawaii 12-4 in a college baseball game last night at Rainbow Stadium. Bruin true freshman Dan Keller pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first collegiate victory. Meanwhile, the UCLAN ripped Hawaii starter Paul Ah Yat for nine hits and seven runs in the first five innings. Kenn Wakakuwa paired hits for Hawaii (6-5), including a home run, his first as a Rainbow. The two teams meet in the three-game series finale this afternoon. Iolani Sweeps Swimming Titles The Iolani girls and boys captured the team titles at the 39th Hawaii High School Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at the University of Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku Pool. The Raider girls won their first-ever title, edging a Punahou team that had won 37 of 38 state crowns. Iolani's triumph in the final 400-yard freestyle relay gave them a 57-55 team victory. Jody Napuunoa had the key hit in ninth, stroking a two-out, full- count, three-run double to knot the score at 9-all. With one out in the tenth, Keoni Hansen laid down a bunt single, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Dartt, and scored the game-winner on a double to right-center by Chris Garnett. "We have had some great donnybrooks with UCLA," said UH coach Les Murakami, "and this was one of them." Freshman southpaw Randon Ho, who came on in relief of starter Mark Johnson, pitched an inning of shutout ball to earn the win. Hawaii improved to 6-4 while the Bruins dropped to 4-3. Game two of the series is this afternoon. 15th Straight for Wahine The good times rolled on for the UH Wahine, as they rolled to a 63-42 win over Nevada-Reno last night in a Big West Conference women's basketball game at the Special Events Arena. A crowd of 1,577, the Wahine's largest of the season, saw Hawaii win their 15th straight game and improve to 17-2 on the season. Tania Brunton scored 22 points and Nani Cockett added 15 for the Wahine, who take on Pacific tomorrow night. Aloha for Ornellas? The on-and-off college football career of George Ornellas is apparently in the off mode at the moment. Ornellas, the former St. Louis High superstar slotback, quit the UH football team last Fall in mid-season, saying he wasn't having fun playing the game anymore. Later, following the appointment of Fred vonAppen as the new UH coach, Ornellas announced his intention to return to the Bows. Until recently, he had been attending classes and participating in the football team's off-season training program. Currently, Ornellas is reportedly living and working in Oregon and is considering transferring to a Mainland school. VonAppen confirmed that Ornellas is AWOL. Sports Shorts The UH men's basketball team (6-13) will take on Fresno State (15-7) in a Western Athletic Conference game tonight at the Special Events Arena. The Bulldogs edged the Rainbows in a game at Fresno earlier this season. ---- The Wahine softball teams from Hawaii Pacific, Chaminade, and UH- Hilo will begin their seasons today. Lucas, the son of NBA great Jerry Lucas, has announced that he will play basketball for Hawaii Pacific next season. The 6-10, 265-pound Lucas played in 27 games last season as a true freshman at Vanderbilt. He also played in Vandy's first five games this season before leaving "for personal reasons." ---- The OIA boys and girls soccer titles will be decided tonight at Pearl City. Nicknamed "Snake" by his teammates because of his knack for slithering between defenders for driving layups, Harris surpassed the 20-point plateau for the 16th time this season. "Coming down the court, we don't see the things he sees," said fellow guard Tes Whitlock, who chipped in with 19 points. "He's amazing." The Bows improved to 6-13 overall and 3-8 in the Western Athletic Conference. Air Force fell to 5-16 and 1-11. Vball Bows Tame Lions The top-ranked UH men's volleyball team won its second straight road match last night, beating No. 15 Loyola Marymount in straight games, 15-10, 15-9, 15-8. Four players had 10 or more kills for the Rainbows, including Yuval Katz (14), Jason Ring (13), Naveh Milo (12) and Aaron Wilton (11). Despite the victory, UH coach Mike Wilton was concerned about his team's concentration. "We better get ready to roll Saturday," said Wilton. "We're in for a lot of trouble if we play like this." Tomorrow, Hawaii (6-0) will square off against UC-Santa Barbara, the nation's second-ranked team. Wahine Seek National Ranking The UH Wahine basketball team hopes to move into the nation's Top 25 with a home victories over Nevada (5-13) tonight and Pacific (13-7) on Sunday. Currently 16-2 and riding a 14-game winning streak, the Wahine are ranked 38th of 296 Division I schools in the USA Today/CNN Coaches' Poll. UH coach Vince Goo said that a ranking will help recruiting and team morale. "It's great for the players," said Goo. Sea Warriors Pound WW Hawaii Pacific showed its might last night, trouncing Western Washington 84-57 in a NAIA men's basketball game at Blaisdell Arena. The Sea Warriors, ranked second in the NAIA, improved to 23-3 by limiting the visiting Vikings to just 23 percent from the field. Juergen Malbeck paced HPU with 21 points and 6 blocks. Llewellyn Smalley added 17 points and 11 rebounds. "We're looking forward to playing (BYU-Hawaii) next Friday in Laie," said HPU coach Tony Sellitto. UH Wahine VBall News The UH Wahine will open their volleyball season at the State Farm/NACWAA Women's Volleyball Classic Aug. 23-24 at Illinois State. In addition to Hawaii, participating in the tournament will be Illinois State, Nebraska, and Michigan State. The following week from Aug. 30-Sept. 2, Hawaii will host Michigan, Louisville, and UCLA in the Wahine Classic at the Special Events Arena. All-American Yuval Katz slammed 22 kills for the Rainbows, who improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Aaron Wilton and Naveh Milo contributed 13 kills apiece. Said UH coach Mike Wilton: "We struggled a little in the first game, but we passed the test." Hawaii continues its road swing with a match tonight at Loyola Marymount and at second-ranked UC-Santa Barbara on Saturday. Sundberg Foul-Prone UH basketball center Seth Sundberg is the most foul-prone player in the Western Athletic Conference, according to statistics released by the league. The 7-1 junior post player has been assessed 53 fouls in 17 games, an average of 3.1 fouls per contest and one foul every 4.5 minutes. Sundberg would probably have been whistled for more fouls if he played more than 15 minutes per game, his current average. Sundberg will attempt to clean up his game when the Rainbows (5-13 overall and 2-8, WAC) take on Air Force (5-15 and 1-10) tonight at the Special Events Arena. The Falcons defeated Hawaii earlier in the season. Bow Bolster Offense Seventeen offensive players were among the 24 who signed letters of intent to attend the University of Hawaii and play football for the Rainbows. Bruins in Town to Face Bows UCLA (3-2), touted as the most talented team in the Pac-10 Conference, will take on the 5-4 UH baseball team in a three-game series beginning tomorrow at Rainbow Stadium. The Bruins, with five players tabbed as pre-season All-Conference selections, are ranked No. 10 by Baseball America and No. 25 by Collegiate Baseball. Yesterday, UCLA defeated UH-Hilo 7-1 on the Big Island. Inoue, also a two-time World Racquetball champion, defeated four Brazilian competitors on Saturday and broke his opponent's foot in the championship bout when he refused to submit. ---- Pearl City will meet Mililani for the OIA girls soccer title on Saturday after both won semifinal matches last night. Robb, 19, pocketed $10,000. ---- Well-known canoe paddler and kayaker Kala Kukea, 53, died today, an apparent heart attack victim. Snafu in Women's Bodyboarding Finale Who's the champion? Apparently, women's world bodyboarding tour officials weren't quite sure after the world championship trophy changed hands three times yesterday following the X-Press World Championship of Bodyboarding event yesterday at the Banzai Pipeline. Brazil's Neymara Carvalho won the event, but miscalculations by officials led to confusion about who the overall world tour champion was. Initially, the trophy was awarded to Brazil's Claudia Ferrari. Then, as Ferrari was making her victory speech, officials announced that a mistake had been made and that Brazilian Mariana Nogueira was the actual world titlist. After checking again, officials determined that Ferrari was indeed the overall points winner. UH Baseball News The UH baseball team will take on UCLA in a three-game series beginning Friday at Rainbow Stadium. According to UH coach Les Murakami, only four players have starting spots nailed down, including second baseman Jody Napuunoa, shortstop Jaime Ahu, catcher Kenn Wakakuwa, and first baseman/center fielder Robert Medeiros. Iolani and Kamehameha, both 8-2-2, will play off for the second spot this Saturday at Kapiolani Park. In ILH girls play, Kamehameha and Punahou are battling for the league crown. The Warriors (7-0-3) will play the Buffanblu (7-1-2) this Saturday. ---- Meanwhile, the OIA playoffs continue with boys' semifinal matches today and girls' semis tomorrow. With the sellout crowd of 50,000 barely settled into their seats, Cincinnati quarterback Jeff Blake connected with Pittsburgh wide receiver Yancey Thigpen for a 93-yard touchdown, a Pro Bowl record. Former UH kicker Jason Elam converted and the AFC led 7-0. The NFC then scored 20 unanswered points before halftime: Morten Anderson booted two field goals, Brett Favre hit Jerry Rice with a one-yard TD strike, and Ken Harvey picked off a Jim Harbaugh pass and returned it 36 yards for a score. In the third quarter, Harbaugh passed 17 yards to Curtis Martin for a touchdown to complete the scoring. The 49er's Rice, who caught 6 passes for 82 yards, was named the game's MVP. ---- New York police officer Mike Volino failed in his attempt to win a million dollars at halftime. Chosen at random from over 100,000 entrants in a promotional contest by Hershey's, Volino would have received $33,333 per year for the next 30 years if he had kicked a 35-yard field goal yesterday. Rainbows Top Santa Clara Robby Robinson supplied the pitching and Greg Millichap the hitting in the UH baseball team's 8-1 series-ending victory over Santa Clara yesterday afternoon at Rainbow Stadium. Robinson, a former Mid-Pacific Institute star, pitched eight strong innings for the Rainbows, allowing just a single run and five hits. He struck out five. Millichap, a true freshman, raised his season's batting average from .182 to .438 with a 5 for 5 effort at the plate. In addition to three singles, Millichap hit a double, a triple, and drove in three runs. The victory boosted Hawaii's record to 5-4. Santa Clara fell to 2-2. Two players with Hawaii ties will take part: former Punahou and University of Hawaii lineman Mark Tuinei earned a spot on the NFC squad as an offensive lineman and former UH kicker Jason Elam will handle the extra-point and field goal duties for the AFC squad. In addition, all the game's top players are here, including marquee players Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, and Bruce Smith. Ah Yat Pitches Bows to Win Southpaw Paul Ah Yat fired a three-hitter to spark the UH baseball team to an 8-0 victory over Santa Clara last night in front of 1,919 fans at Rainbow Stadium. Mixing his pitches well, Ah Yat dominated the visiting Broncos, striking out five and walking three in going the nine-inning distance. "Paul was focused," said UH coach Les Murakami. "His ball had movement." Leading just 2-0 entering the seventh, the Bows (4-4) put the game away with three runs in that frame and three more in the eighth. Robert Medeiros paired hits and scored twice to lead the Bow offense. The two teams play the rubber match of the three game series today. Basketball Bows Bounced Hawaii lost to San Diego State, 103-94, in Western Athletic Conference men's basketball game last night at San Diego. The outcome was marred by a controversial call in the final minute. Trailing 97-92 with 45 seconds left, the Bows apparently forced a 10-second backcourt violation. However, referee Jim Danner ruled that an Aztec player had signaled for a time-out before 10- seconds had elapsed therefore giving SDSU possession of the ball. The Aztecs then hit a handful of freethrows in the end to ice the game. "We came out and fought," said guard Anthony Harris, who scored a team-high 29 points for Hawaii (5-13 overall, 2-8 WAC). "But I'm tired of fighting and not winning. I want to win. Period." Tes Whitlock and Justice Sueing added 27 and 18 points respectively for the Bows. Surfriders Rule Prep Softball A diving Pomai Kapule scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Kailua a 3-2 victory over Waianae in the championship game of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association softball tournament last night at Roosevelt stadium. A crowd of about 1,500 witnessed Kapule's heroics. Also the game's winning pitcher, Kapule raced home on Anu Kekauoha's grounder to Seasider shortstop Keala Downey, whose throw to the plate was a split second too late. Setter Eric Pichel also played well for Hawaii. "He was setting absolutely beautiful," said UH coach Mike Wilton. Hawaii takes to the road for three games this week. Broncos Bust Bows Santa Clara roughed up Hawaii ace Mark Johnson for nine runs in six innings to grab an 11-5 series-opening victory last night before a crowd of 1,498 at Rainbow Stadium. Said Johnson, who entered the game with a 2-0 record and 0.56 ERA, "I couldn't find my synch." But the Broncos (2-0) found theirs, breaking opening a 3-2 game with six runs in the top of the sixth. Kelly Konishi was 3 for 3, including a homer in the second, and Jaime Ahu had two hits for the Rainbows (3-4). The two teams will meet again tonight. Paul Ah Yat (1-1) will be on the mound for the Rainbows. State Softball Final: Kailua vs Waianae Defending champion Kailua and OIA runner-up Waianae advanced to tonight's championship game of the 20th Hawaii High School Athletic Association softball tournament with semifinal victories yesterday. In one semi, Pomai Kapule fired a three-hitter to spark the Surfriders past No. 4 Baldwin, 3-0. In the other, Waianae rallied past Castle 6-5. Ashelle Acosta singled in the game winner for the Seariders in the bottom of the sixth. A week ago, Kailua defeated Waianae 4-2 for the OIA crown. Bows on the Road The UH men's basketball team, which has not won two consecutive games since November, hopes to make it two-straight tonight when it faces San Diego State tonight in San Diego. The Rainbows (5-12 overall, 2-7 WAC) defeated the Aztecs last weekend. "We want to go in and bust butt, baby," said Rainbow guard Tes Whitlock, always the optimist. "If we win it, it'll be two in a row. Then we're back for two home games. Anything can happen. Maybe we can turn this thing around." Sports Shorts Two major golf events are scheduled for the month of February on Oahu. The 31st Hawaiian Open, with a total purse of $1.2 million, is set for February 15-18 at the Waialae Country Club. Two of Four Seeds Advance in State Softball It was a good day for the OIA as three teams from that league notched quarterfinal victories to advance to the semifinal round of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Softball Tournament at Roosevelt Stadium. Earning spots in today's semis are top-ranked Kailua, No. 3 Baldwin, and two unseeded teams, Waianae and Castle. The No. 1 Surfriders, with Pomai Kapule pitching a no-hitter and ripping a two-run homer, topped Mililani 4-1. In other quarterfinal action, Baldwin, trailing 2-0 entering the final inning, rallied for a 3-2 victory over Iolani; Waianae scored two runs in the bottom of the final inning in a 4- 3 nail-biter over No. 4 Waimea; and Castle upset No. 2 University High 5-2. The 50-year-old Eldredge was traveling to a pre-season baseball game at Kaiser High when he began experiencing chest pains. "He's in good spirits," said his daughter, Denise. "He wants to go back to baseball and golfing." Eldredge has coached and taught at Punahou for 26 years. He is also the color commentator for KFVE's University of Hawaii baseball broadcasts. Souza in at Kamehameha Bill "Kanani" Souza was named the new head football coach at Kamehameha, replacing Blane Gaison, who was promoted to an administrative position at the Schools. Souza, a Kamehameha graduate, was the offensive coordinator for the University of Hawaii football team last season. He coached at UH for 10 years, with prior stints at Colorado and Northern Colorado. Gaison, a former Kamehameha star who went on to a successful playing career at UH and for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL, had a 44-40-1 record in seven seasons as Warrior head coach. Along with Erv Kau, Gaison will serve as co-director of athletics at Kamehameha. ---- In a related story, Les Parilla has been promoted from offensive coordinator to head football coach at Roosevelt. The 34-year-old Parilla, a physical education teacher at Roosevelt, replaces Jeff Azuma who resigned for personal reasons at the end of the 1995 season. Broncos Next for Bows The UH baseball team (3-3) will face Santa Clara (1-0) in a three-game series that begins tomorrow at Rainbow Stadium. The Broncos won their season-opener against San Francisco State and are considered strong contenders in the West Coast Conference. "This team is no pushover," said UH coach Les Murakami, a 1958 Santa Clara grad. Smith Back UH basketball player Alika Smith is back practicing with the team after recovering from a slight concussion and a gash that required stitches in the Bows' game against San Diego State on Sunday night. "I had a headache and dizziness for a while. But I feel OK now," said Smith, the starting point guard for the Rainbows. Four Advance in High School Softball Castle, Mililani, Waianae, and Iolani all advanced to today's quarterfinals with opening round victories yesterday in the 20th Hawaii High School Athletic Association softball tournament at Roosevelt stadium. In the most exciting game of the day, Mililani rallied for a 4-3 victory over Konawaena, scoring all of its runs in the seventh and final inning. In other action, Castle, sparked by the pitching and hitting of Kanela Horner, doubled-up on Pahoa 6-3; Waianae routed Kalaheo, 11-0; and Iolani cruised past Kaiser, 7-1. Today, Waianae will meet No. 4 Waimea, Iolani will challenge No. 3 Baldwin, Castle will square off against No. 2 University High, and Mililani will face top-seeded Kailua. Sports Shorts The Hualalai golf course, the newest course in Hawaii, opened Monday. Located about eight miles from the Keahole Kona airport on the Big Island, Hualalai is a private course and will be the site of Senior PGA Tournament of Champions next January. ---- Ayako Okamoto of Japan won the LPGA Skins Challenge yesterday at the Mauna Kea Resort golf course on the Big Island. Okamoto finished the 18-hole, one-day event with 12 skins, good for $78,000. Tuinei is an offensive tackle for the Super Champion Dallas Cowboys and Elam is the place kicker for the Denver Broncos. This is Tuinei's second consecutive Pro Bowl and Elam's first. Harris a Fugitive UH basketball player Anthony Harris is a wanted man in the state of Connecticut for not responding appropriately to a reckless driving charge last August. Said Connecticut police spokesman Dale Hourigan: "In this case, the fugitive has been uncooperative in making arrangements to surrender himself." Harris was arrested last June 28 on Interstate 84 in western Connecticut for reckless driving, a misdemeanor. He pleaded guilty at his arraignment but did not show up for a sentencing hearing on August 23 because he had flown to Hawaii on Aug. 21 to begin Fall semester classes. "It's a misunderstanding that will be cleared up," said Harris' attorney David Schutter. Harris is the leading scorer in the Western Athletic Conference with a 24.2 average. Ching Commits to Irish Punahou defensive lineman Jason Ching yesterday made a verbal commitment to play football for Notre Dame next year. A 6-foot-5 Prep All-American, Ching said he was confident in his decision, "I like the blend of athletics and academics. I felt (Notre Dame) was the best place for me." While the Notre Dame landed its prized catch, the University of Hawaii received some good and not so good news yesterday. On the plus side, the Bows received commitments from two players: 6-6, 300 pound offensive lineman James Mane, a 1993 Aiea High grad who is transferring from Division I-AA Buffalo State; and 6-1, 195 pound quarterback Josh Skinner from Overland High (Colo.). On the down side, several players being pursued by UH announced their intentions to go elsewhere including former Leilehua player Adam Jones (to Washington State), former Castle High player Tiki Sagapolutele (to Washington State), former Campbell High player Ryan Akina (to Utah), and Kahuku High's Jason Keo and Sakalia Magalei (to BYU). Jones, Sagapolutele, and Akina signed with UH as high school seniors but did not meet academic requirements and enrolled at Mainland junior colleges. Brunton Cited University of Hawaii basketball player Tania Brunton was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. In two Wahine road victories last week, the 5- foot-11 Brunton averaged 27.5 points, 9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists. Baseball Bows 3-3 UH baseball coach Les Murakami is looking for improved play from his outfielders, who are hitting for a combined .163 average. "We have one of the fastest outfields around, but they are not swinging the bat. There's not a .200 hitter in the lineup." His UH Rainbow basketball team defeated San Diego State 88-79 before a crowd of 2,935 at the Special Events Arena to end a seven-game losing streak. At one point in the second half, Hawaii led by 19 points, 55-36, but the Aztecs rallied, taking a 68-67 lead with about three minutes left. Refusing to wilt in crunch time like they had in recent weeks, the Rainbows showed some resolve in the end. Hawaii (5-12 overall and 2-7 in the WAC), with Justice Sueing (25 points) and Anthony Harris (29) the main steadying forces, held off SDSU when the outcome of the game was in doubt. "They showed they can win tough ones down the stretch," said Wallace. Cardinal Nip Bows Stanford broke a 3-all tie with an unplanned delayed double-steal in the eighth inning to push across the winning run in a 5-3 baseball victory over Hawaii yesterday afternoon at Rainbow Stadium. With two down and runners at the corners in the eighth, Rainbow pitcher Robby Robinson caught Jody Gerut taking too big of a lead off first. When a run-down to nab Gerut ensued, teammate Troy Kent dashed home, just beating Jody Napuunoa's throw to the plate. "It wasn't planned that way," said Stanford coach Mark Marquess of the delayed steal. The loss was a tough one for the Bows, who jumped out to 3-0 lead after three innings but could not mount a threat against Cardinal reliever and eventual winner Tom Reimer, who struck out nine and allowed just three hits in six innings of work. Napuunoa had four hits and two RBIs to lead Hawaii (3-3). The second-ranked Cardinal improved to 2-1. Brunton Paces Wahine Tania Brunton did it again. Last night, the 5-11 forward scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Hawaii to a 74-59 Big West Conference women's basketball victory over Cal-Irvine at Irvine, Calif. Over the past month, Brunton has been a dominating presence for the Wahine, consistently scoring 20-plus points and grabbing 10-plus rebounds. Michelle Macintyre added 15 points for Hawaii, which improved to 15-2 overall and 9-0 in the conference. Bows-Bruins to Meet Again UH men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton downplayed the top-ranked Rainbows' 5-game Outrigger Hotels Invitational Tournament victory over No. 2 UCLA on Saturday night, saying that the really big matches against the Bruins have yet to be played. "It's still early," said Wilton. "Plus, we play (UCLA) twice more this season and those are the two that will count." Hawaii's Yuval Katz, who slammed 35 kills and six aces against UCLA, was the tournament MVP. Joining him on the all-tourney team were teammates Jason Ring and Erick Pichel, UCLA's Stein Metzger and Brian Wells, Ball State's Pnil Eatherton, and Penn State's Ivan Contreras. Floyd Big Skins Winner For the third year in a row, Raymond Floyd was the top gun in the Senior Skins game. In two days of competition at the Mauna Lani South Course on the Big Island, Floyd won eight skins which equated into $240,000. Jim Colbert finished second with seven skins and $180,000, while Arnold Palmer (2 skins, $80,000) and Jack Nicklaus (1 skin, $40,000) finished third and fourth respectively. Local Racewalking Jim Carmines and Kelly Watson were the men's and women's winners in the Sam Martz Memorial 5-kilometer racewalk at Kaiser High School yesterday morning. Carmines, 52, an engineer from New Cumberland, Pa., finished in 25 minutes, 11 seconds, an average of 8:02 per mile. The victory not only gave the Bows (3-0) the title of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational, but also the early-season king-of-the- volleyball-hill bragging rights. The magnificent one, Yuval Katz, ripped 35 kills in 71 attempts against the Bruins, earning tourney MVP honors for his toil. "I was tired," said Katz, "but I wanted the ball every time." And when the Bows needed a point or side-out, he got it, more often than not. Paul Nihipali had 25 kills for UCLA (2-1) while true freshman Fred Robins, a former Kamehameha standout, added 23. Baseball Bows Blasted Stanford ripped Hawaii 16-0 in a college baseball game yesterday at Rainbow Stadium. An afternoon crowd of 1,707 saw Jason Middlebrook and Jeff Austin combined to shut out the Bows on seven hits. In the ILH title showdown at Cartwright Field, the Junior Bows topped Iolani 3-2 in 13 innings. It was Hawaii's 12th victory in a row and upped its overall and league records to 14-2 and 8-0. The Wahine trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half. Bows vs Cards Tonight The UH baseball team will open a three-game series tonight against second-ranked Stanford. Right-handed fireballer Mark Johnson will start on the mound for the Rainbows (2-1). Kyle Peterson, a teammate of Johnson's on the U.S. National team this summer, will start for Stanford (0-0). "This series will be a challenge and will test our limits," said Johnson. Local Small College Basketball Two Hawaii college hoop squads were in action last night and bother were victorious. The big gun for coach Mike Wilton's Rainbows is sophomore All-American Yuval Katz, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter from Israel. "UV is a better player than he was last year, no doubt," said Wilton. "He's a better hitter, he's improved his blocking, he's much better at setting the ball and his floor defense has improved a lot." Although Jason Olive, Sean Scott, and Nikolas Berger completed their eligibility, setter Erik Pichel, swing hitters Aaron Wilton and Naveh Milo, and middle blockers Jason Ring and Rick Tune are capable of filling the void. Pichel, Wilton and Tune are returnees while Ring was the Western States Player of the Year for Los Angeles Pierce Junior College and Milo was playing for Israel's national team last season. "We don't have as much size as we did last season," said coach Wilton, "but we have a chance to be as good or better." The Rainbows will take on Ball State in a first round game of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. UCLA and Penn State will square off in the other opening round match-up. Two More Commit to Bows Running back Afatia Thompson and quarterback John Gurasich are the two most recent players to give verbal commitments to play for the University of Hawaii football team. Punahou's Thompson, a 5-11, 190 pounder who led the ILH in rushing despite missing half the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, will probably sit out next season while he continues rehabilitation. The 6-4, 205 pound Gurasich threw for 1,364 yards and 18 touchdowns for Austin Lake Travis High (Texas) last season. February 7 is the first day incoming freshman can sign a letter of intent. Akana, a sophomore, is just returning from a two-year Mormon Church mission to the Cleveland inner-city area. Akana, whose older brother Jarrin was a starting guard for UH a couple seasons ago, said living in Ohio was a huge change from his laid back life on Molokai: "It was a big shock," said Akana. "The people, the way they lived, I had never seen anything like that." Although his missionary work took up most of his time, Akana did have a chance to play some pickup games against tough Cleveland street players. "I was able to make a lot of friends playing basketball. I think that made (the mission) easier." ---- Hawaii Pacific has returned home after winning four tough road games on the Mainland last week. The Sea Warriors, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, improved to 19-3. HPU center Juergen Malbeck continued to play well, earning Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for the third time in four weeks. He averaged 23 points and 9.3 rebounds on the four-game swing. Priceless Price Mililani High senior Keiko Price has her sights set on the OIA championship meet this weekend and much more thereafter. The 5-foot-10 Price has never lost an individual event in local high school competition and will compete in the 50 free, the 100 breaststroke, and two relays this weekend for the Trojans, heavy favorites to capture their fourth consecutive OIA girls' crown. Price, who will attend UCLA on a swimming scholarship next year, is also the three-time defending state champ in the 50 and 10 free events. She will attempt to qualify for the US Olympic team in those events at the Olympic Trials March 6-12 at Indianapolis. Sports Shorts The UH-Hilo baseball team lost a pair of games in the Hawaiian Pride Classic at the UHH Baseball Complex. On Monday night, the Vulcans were pounded by Washington State 11-0. Last night, Texas Christian subdued UHH 7-3. The Vulcans are 2-5 so far this season. ---- Pearl City clinched the OIA West girls' soccer title by battling Aiea to a scoreless tie yesterday afternoon at Aiea. UH football coach Fred vonAppen also received commitments from two others: 6-5, 240-pound tight end Ryan Green, a starter last season for the now defunct University of Pacific team; and 6-2, 225 pound linebacker Likaki Malaki, an all-league selection from Los Angeles' Dorsey High School. Bows Show Promise Despite being pounded 14-0 in the series finale against Washington State, the University of Hawaii baseball team (2-1) looks solid, particularly in the pitching department. Right- handed ace Mark Johnson looked sharp in his seven innings of work in the season opener. He struck out 11 and walked just one. Brunton Honored Tania Brunton was named the Big West basketball Player of the Week for her recent performances for the UH Wahine (13-3). And they kept pouring it on, victimizing five Bow relief pitchers for eight more runs on eight hits. Kyle Poffenroth worked seven innings for WSU (1-2), spacing out four hits. Hawaii, which fell to 2-1, will face No. 2 Stanford in a three-game home series this weekend. East Tops West New Mexico running back Winslow Oliver rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on ten carries to lead the East All-Stars to a 17-10 triumph over the West in the 50th Annual Hula Bowl yesterday afternoon before a crowd of 25,112 at Aloha Stadium. Oliver, named the game's MVP, set a Hula Bowl record for the longest rushing touchdown with a 53 sprint to paydirt in the fourth quarter that broke a 10-all tie. Hawaii was in the game throughout, tying the score at 78 with 2:21 left. But several key misses later, one by Alika Smith and another by Tes Whitlock, left the Bows limping back home with 4-12 overall and 1-7 WAC marks. Whitlock scored 26 points and Anthony Harris added 23 for the Rainbows. Baseball Bows Triumph The UH baseball team improved to 2-0 by edging Washington State 6-5 last night at Rainbow Stadium. A crowd of 2,426 watched the Rainbows convert six Cougar errors into five unearned runs. Starting pitcher Paul Ah Yat worked eight innings, striking out 12. Kamuela Binkie came on in the ninth to preserve the win. Robby Blakely had two of the Bows' eight hits. The two teams conclude their three-game series today. Sumo Day 15 Results Takanonami defeated Takanohana in a playoff to capture the title of the Tokyo New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament last night. The two rikishi finished the tourney at 14-1, necessitating a winner- take-all match. Earlier, Takanonami defeated Kaio (10-5) and Takanohana topped Hawaii's Musashimaru (9-6). Even the return of high scoring guard Tes Whitlock (16 points in 33 minutes) couldn't improve the Bows' fortune. Hawaii fell to 4-11 overall and a cellar-dwelling 1-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Rainbows led 59-53 with just under ten minutes remaining but collapsed thereafter, having no answer to a 39-14 Falcon barrage in crunch time. "We have to learn to finish ball games," said Whitlock, who said he was pleased with his performance despite hitting just 4 of 16 shots from the floor. "We played hard and no one gave up. We'll practice hard and come back against Fresno (State tomorrow night)." Bow Baseball Team Opens Tonight Ace pitcher Mark Johnson will take the mound tonight in the UH baseball team's season opener against Washington State at Rainbow Stadium. "He gives us more offense," said UH coach Riley Wallace. "The big thing is he gives us senior leadership. His experience is a big factor." Sumo Day 12 Results The beat goes on for yokozuna Takanohana as he won his 12th match without a loss in the New Year's Grand Sumo tournament last night in Tokyo. The grand champion took another step toward the tourney title by forcing out No. 7 maegashira Terao (5-7). Meanwhile, two rikishi from Hawaii lost yesterday. Baseball Bows to Debut Les Murakami will embark on his 26th season as the University of Hawaii baseball skipper tomorrow night at Rainbow Stadium when his team takes on Washington State in the first game of a three- game series. Murakami will send U.S. Olympic team hopeful Mark Johnson (8-8 3.53) to the mound tomorrow night, southpaw Paul Ah Yat (4-2, 4.92) on Saturday, and Robby Robinson (5-4, 4.32) on Sunday. The Cougars, directed by second-year coach Steve Farrington, are favorites to capture the Pac-10 North Division. Wahine Return Home After a successful two-game road swing, the UH Wahine basketball team (11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Big West Conference) have returned home and will face Long Beach State (5-7 and 2-3) tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. Last week on the mainland, Hawaii defeated Nevada-Reno (55-52) and Pacific (67- 65). "When you win on the road, that makes you so much tougher at home," said Hawaii coach Vince Goo. Bows-BYU Tonight The struggling UH men's basketball team hopes to rebound from a butt-kicking by Utah on Saturday night when it takes on BYU tonight at the Special Events Arena. Hawaii, which played the Utes without starters Tes Whitlock and Justice Sueing (suspensions), is 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. Fornelia Out at Kailua Citing a heavy workload and declining health as reasons, Kailua High School football coach Jerry Fornelia announced his resignation yesterday. Bows Host Utes Tomorrow All-American candidate Keith Van Horn and his Utah Ute teammates are in town to take on Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference basketball game tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. The Rainbows, off to a disappointing 1-3 start in the conference, will have do battle with their 13th-ranked foes without starting forward Justice Sueing, who must sit out both games against the Utes this season as punishment for elbowing Van Horn in the head in the WAC postseason tournament final last March. "We'll just put somebody else in there and try to play harder," said UH coach Riley Wallace. Two Invited UH pitcher Mark Johnson and Arizona State hurler Kaipo Spenser of Wailuku, Maui were among 40 players extended invitations to the USA Baseball team's spring camp at Millington, Tenn. in May. Both are junior righthanders, were members of the 1995 USA Baseball Team, and are vying for spots on the US Olympic baseball team's 25-man roster. Sports Shorts Two UH football players were named to the WAC academic all- conference team yesterday. Offensive lineman Michael Anderson from New Zealand had a 3.45 GPA in arts and sciences, and special teams player Tyler Tanigawa of Kauai had a 3.42 GPA in food science. ---- UH swimmer Peter Lindh was named the WAC Swimmer of the Week for January 1-7.
