** All America Honors for Ljungquist, Ah Mow **
University of Hawaii Wahine players Angelica Ljungquist and Robyn
AH Mow were named American Volleyball Coaches Association first-
team All-Americans today. Ljungquist, a junior middle blocker
from Sweden, earned second-team All-America honors the past two
seasons. Ah Mow, a McKinley High grad, is a junior setter and an
All Big West Conference selection in 1994 and 1995. The two, who
will be honored at the NCAA Final Four in Amherst, Mass., are the
Wahine's most recent first team choices, joining Kee Williams
(1991), Cheri Boyer (1991), and Karrie Trieschman (1990).
** VonAppen, Who Ya Gonna Call?
In a press conference today, University of Hawaii athletic
director Hugh Yoshida officially announced the hiring of Fred
vonAppen as the school's new head football coach. VonAppen is
quickly trying to assemble a staff of assistants and, according
to unnamed sources, will hire former Stanford ('77) and San
Francisco 49er ('81-'84) quarterback Guy Benjamin as his
offensive coordinator. Other candidates for assistant coaching
positions include former Stanford All-American Ken Margerum,
currently the head coach at Hawaii Prep Academy; Monte Clark,
former 49er head coach; Bill Singler, a former 49er running back;
Doug Semones, head coach at Kahuku High; and Cal Lee, head coach
at St. Louis.

Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore. Garcia is in a close battle for
the world tour title with defending world champ Kelly Slater of
Florida and hot up-and-comer Rob Machado of California. Both
advanced yesterday, Slater in spectacular fashion with a near
perfect score of 29.26 out of 30 in round one. Other Hawaii
surfers joining Garcia in the second round are Derek Ho, Shane
Dorian, Kaipo Jaquias, Pancho Sullivan, Ross Williams, Kalani
Robb, and Larry Rios.

Despite debilitating humidity and soaring temperatures, a record
number of runners crossed the finish line at Sunday's Honolulu
Marathon. Honolulu Marathon spokeswoman Eileen Mortenson said
26,986 runners, 73 percent from Japan, finished the race this
year, the highest finisher count of any marathon in the world in
1995. The number also broke the former Honolulu record of 25,801
set last year.

** VonAppen Speaks **
Fred vonAppen, still awaiting official Board of Regents
confirmation that he will be the next head football coach at the
University of Hawaii, has begun moving forth nevertheless,
announcing his plans for the Rainbows. VonAppen, who must
complete his commitment to the University of Colorado, which will
play in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day, said he will install
the "West Coast offense" employed by the San Francisco 49ers and
will make a strong commitment to recruit local players. "We have
to make a concerted effort to keep Island guys at home," he said.
As for assistants, vonAppen said he'll hire the best coaches he
can find, which may include several current UH assistants and the
three Lee brothers: Cal, head coach at St. Louis High; Ron, St.
Louis offensive coordinator; and Tommy, quarterback coach at the
University of Utah. VonAppen, who will make Hawaii his 15th stop
in his nearly 30 years in coaching, squelched talk that he will
stay just a few years and then move on. "I'm not looking
beyond," he said. "Pro football was never the ultimate. I want
to work on a college campus. I was trained as an educator.
That's what I am."
** Ruffin to Philly **
Former University of Hawaii basketball player Trevor Ruffin
joined the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers recently, inking a guaranteed
one-year contract that will earn him $225,000. Ruffin, who
played for the Phoenix Suns last season, started this season with
Paok in the Greek Pro League. He had a contract for $750,000
there. Homesick, Ruffin sought a release from the Greek team and
returned home to Buffalo, New York, where he was contacted by the
NBA club. In his 1995 season debut with the 76ers on Saturday
night, Ruffin scored 10 points in 19 minutes of action.

** VonAppen New Bow Grid Boss **
Fred vonAppen will be named the next head football coach at the
University of Hawaii, according to sources close to the
University. Currently the defensive line coach at Colorado,
vonAppen has 30 years of experience, having completed stints at
Arkansas, UCLA, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Stanford, the Green Bay
Packers, and the San Francisco 49ers, where he earned two Super
Bowl rings. He has never been a head coach before. The 53-year-
old vonAppen was the classmate of UH athletic director Hugh
Yoshida at Linfield College in the mid-60s and is married and the
father of seven. "He's a good coach on the field and,
relationship-wise, he's good," said former St. Louis High player
Viliamu Maumau, who toiled under vonAppen at Colorado.
** South Africans Rule Honolulu Marathon **
Enduring steamy, humid conditions that sent dozens of runners to
hospital emergency rooms, South Africans Johannes Mabitle and
Colleen De Reuck were the respective men's and women's winners at
yesterday's Honolulu Marathon. Mabitle, 25, a coal mine worker
who earned $20,000 for the triumph, outbattled three-time
Honolulu winner Benson Maysa for 20 miles, finally pulling away
for good in the final 100 meters to win in a non-record time of 2
hours, 16 minutes, 8 seconds. Maysa finished 11 seconds back.
African runners captured nine of the first ten places in the
race. John Smith, an oceanographer at the University of Hawaii,
was the first Hawaii and U.S. finisher, striding across the line
in 29th place with a time of 2:38:53. In the women's division,
De Reuck (2:37:29), who also earned $20,000, blazed to a
convincing triumph over runner-up Veronica Kanga of Kenya
(2:39:35). Eight-time Honolulu women's champion Carla Beurskens
of the Netherlands finished third in 2:42:27. Hawaii's top woman
runner, Darlene Mota, finished fifth in 2:50:59. In the
wheelchair division, Tom Sellers of Florida edged Georgia native
Scot Hollonbeck in a photo finish. Both were credited with times
of 1:38:30.

** Bows Lose Exhibition **
Hawaii's inability to defend in the post and on the break became
glaringly apparent in a 106-96 men's basketball exhibition loss
to High-Five America last night at the Special Events Arena.
High-Five, a team composed of former college players, "gave us a
good lesson in basketball," said UH coach Riley Wallace, who
watched his foes shred his Bows for 40 fast break points.
"Unless we play 110 (percent) all the time, we're not very good.
We need to understand that," said Wallace. Justice Sueing was
the one bright light on a cloudy evening for the Rainbows,
scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. The Bows return to
action for the Hawaii Nike Festival on Dec 19-20.

In a preliminary event for today's Honolulu Marathon, Phillimon
Hanneck of Zimbabwe and Regina Jacobs of Oakland, Calif. strided
to close victories in the Nike P.L.A.Y. Waikiki Mile yesterday
afternoon. Hanneck, who finished in a time of 3:59.49, won the

and Canada's Kevin O'Sullivan (4:00.31) on an out-and-back course
that began and ended at the intersection of Kalakaua and Kapahulu
avenues. Jacobs (4:30.48) held off pre-race favorite Maria
Mutola of Mozambique, who apparently erred near the end, lunging
and stumbling about 10 yards before the finish line. Mutola did
not finish. Sinead Delahunty of Ireland (4:31.19) and Suzy
Hamilton of the U.S. (4:32.88) finished second and third,

** Spartans Shock Wahine **
The magical run is over. And a state cried for its proud and
talented heroines. The University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball
team, the darlings of the Aloha State, saw its 31-game winning
streak and its season come to a stunning conclusion last night
following a 15-6, 15-8, 10-15, 7-15, 12-15 loss to a tall,
determined Michigan State squad in the NCAA Mountain Regional
Final at a sold-out Special Events Arena. The Wahine grabbed a
quick two-games to none lead, and when they raced to a 4-0
cushion in game three, appeared ready to clinch a spot in the
Final Four. But the Spartans, led by the 12-block, 15-kill
effort of regional MVP Dana Cooke, rallied to overtake the Wahine
for a 15-10 game-three triumph. With Hawaii attackers Joselyn
Robins, Therese Crawford, and Angelica Ljungquist seeming to lose
the snap they had displayed earlier, the Spartans continued their
charge, winning game four with surprising ease, 15-7. In the
final rally scoring game, MSU sprinted to a 6-1 advantage and
although the Wahine rallied for an 11-all tie, Cooke made two
huge plays, a block and a kill, to give the Spartans a two-point
advantage they would not surrender. "We have nothing to be
ashamed of," said UH coach Dave Shoji at the post-match press
conference. While he said this, two of his star players,
Ljungquist and senior captain Jenny Wilton, sat next to him
unsuccessfully fighting back tears. "I'm proud of my team," said
Shoji. "They over-achieved, did more than anybody thought they
could do."
** Lee Out? **
Unnamed sources say that St. Louis High School football coach Cal
Lee is no longer a candidate for the head coaching job at the
University of Hawaii. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida would
not confirm that Lee has been crossed off of his short list. If
the sources are correct, then four candidates remain: BYU
offensive coordinator Norm Chow, Arizona associate head coach
Duane Akina, Colorado assistant Fred vonAppen, and Ohio State
defensive coordinator Bill Young. Each has reportedly offered
Lee a position on his staff.
** Honolulu Marathon Tomorrow **
A record 32,195 people are signed up to run in tomorrow's
Honolulu Marathon. Between 25,000 to 30,000 are expected at the
starting line for the 5:30 a.m. start. Among the throng will be
defending champion and three-time winner Benson Masya of Kenya
and nine-time women's winner Carla Beurskens of the Netherlands.
Both will be vying for the $20,000 prizes given to the first
men's and women's finishers.
----
A related event, the second annual Nike P.L.A.Y. Waikiki Mile,
will be held this afternoon on Kalakaua Avenue. World class
men's and women's runners, including Ireland's Marcus O'Sullivan
and Maria Mutola of Mozambique, will be competing for the $4,000
first prize.
** Bows Play High Five Tonight **
The UH men's basketball team returns to action tonight with an
exhibition game against High Five America at the Special Events
Arena. UH coach Riley Wallace will experiment at the guard
position, rotating Anthony Harris, Alika Smith, and Sam Smith at
the point. Also unresolved is the role of Justice Sueing, who
could start at either the power or small forward positions.
** Goodwill Tie **
The East and West squads battled to a 14-14 tie in the Building
Trades Council Goodwill Football Classic last night before 2,608
fans at Aloha Stadium. With his team trailing 14-8 with less
than two minutes remaining, West quarterback Fred Salanoa of
Radford High scored on a one yard plunge on fifth down, an
oversight missed by the officiating crew. "That's all right,"
said East coach Wendell Look of Iolani. "It was a great game for
the kids and the fans." Radford defensive back Sennick Allen had
an outstanding game for the West, snaring an errant Corey Shippy
(Farrington) pass and returning a punt 35 yards. For the East,
Kahuku's Ken Faavae rushed for 59 yards on nine carries while
Pac-Five quarterback Sean Murphy completed five of eight passes
for 75 yards.
** HIAC Tourney Begins **
Jojo Outlaw scored a layup with two seconds remaining to propel
Hawaii Pacific past Chaminade 98-96 in an opening round game of
the Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball
Tournament last night at Blaisdell Arena. Seven-footer Juergen
Malbech scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Sea
Warriors. In an earlier game, Paulasi Matavao scored 29 points
to lead BYU-Hawaii past UH-Hilo 97-84. HPU will take on BYUH in
the tournament final tonight.

State 15-8, 15-5, 11-15, 15-13 in an NCAA Regional semifinal
volleyball
match last night at the Special Events Arena. The win advanced
Hawaii
(31-0) to the regional final tonight before another sellout crowd
against
Michigan State (33-2), a 15-11, 15-13, 15-10 victor over San Diego
State
in an earlier semifinal at the SEA. In last night's victory, it was
Hawaii's
intimidating block that sent the Sun Devils packing for the long plane
ride back to Tempe. "That's probably the best block of any team
we've
faced all year," said ASU coach Patti Snyder-Park. "They took us
completely out of our offense." Offensively, setter Robyn Ah Mow
spread
the wealth nicely, with the Wahine's leading attackers--Angelica
Ljungquist (16), Joselyn Robins (14), Therese Crawford (13), and
Jenny
Wilton (12)--each hammering double-digit kill figures. "The fan
support
Hawaii gets here is just awesome," said Jenn Snyder, who led ASU
with 16
kills. "I have a such a headache from that crowd."
** Chow time for Bows? **
Rumor has it that BYU associate head football coach and offensive
coordinator Norm Chow is the leading candidate for the currently-
vacant University of Hawaii head coach position. Chow dismissed
talk that UH cannot afford to compensate him adequately.
"Everybody has a price tag," said Chow. "But discussions haven't
even gotten to dollar figures yet." Chow, a Punahou graduate and
formerly the head coach at Waialua High School, said he is
confident in his ability to recruit locally and on the mainland.
And he says he already has a coaching staff in mind, which would
include the three Lee brothers--Cal Lee, the current head coach
at St. Louis High; Ron Lee, the Crusaders' offensive coordinator;
and Tommy Lee, currently the quarterback coach at Utah. UH
athletic director Hugh Yoshida, who will choose the next UH
coach, is expected to announce his decision in the next few days.
** Powell Rules Sunset **
Australia's Shane Powell slashed and bottom-turned his way to the
the Moku Hawaii World Cup of Surfing title in 2- to 3-foot waves
yesterday at Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore. The event is
the second in the Hawaii Triple Crown of Surfing. Another
Aussie, Richard Lovett, won the first--the Wyland Galleries
Hawaiian Pro--a few weeks ago. Powell pocketed $4,000 for
yesterday's triumph, with Hawaii's Derek Ho ($2,000) finishing
second and Australia's Nathan Webster ($1,500) finishing third.
Two other Hawaii surfers, Kalani Robb and John Shimooka, finished
tied for fifth, each earning $1,000. Attention now turns to the
final event of the Triple Crown, the Chiemsee Pipe Masters, which
will begin tomorrow at the Banzai Pipeline, surf permitting.
** Bows Return Home **
Following a disappointing setback to Long Beach State on
Wednesday night, the UH men's basketball team (2-1) returns home
to take on High Five America in an exhibition game tomorrow night
at the Special Events Arena. The Rainbows, who displayed
vulnerability to the press in the loss to the 49ers, will rotate
Anthony Harris, Alika Smith, and Sam Smith at the point guard
position on Saturday night. "We have to find the right
combination, especially now that teams know they can press us,"
said UH coach Riley Wallace. "And our guards have to look to our
big people more. We'll never know what they can do unless we
give them the ball."

** Bows Beached **
Facing relentless pressure, the UH men's basketball team
succumbed in the end, falling to Long Beach State 71-66 last
night at the Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Hawaii, forced into
21 turnovers by the pressing 49ers, stayed even with Long Beach
for most of the game but faded down the stretch. "They extended
us harder than we've ever been extended," said UH coach Riley
Wallace. "We kind of lost our legs at the end." Anthony Harris
led the Bows with 19 points. Justice Sueing, playing his first
game of season for the Rainbows (2-1) after being suspended for
elbowing an opponent in a WAC playoff game last March, added 15
points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
** Wahine Have Appointment with 'Devils Tonight **
Led by 6-foot Christine Garner and 6-foot-2 Jenn Snyder, Arizona
State (19-7) will attempt to end the UH Wahine's 30-game winning
streak party tonight in a loser-out NCAA Championship Mountain
Regional semifinal volleyball match at the sold-out Special
Events Arena. "I'm really concerned about their outside attack,"
said UH head coach Dave Shoji. "From what I understand, Snyder
is playing better than Garner, and Garner is regarded as one of
the best left-side hitters in the country. That's scary." Shoji
can ease his jitters when he considers the talent on his side of
the net, including Big West Conference player of the year
Angelica Ljungquist and all-conference first-teamers Therese
Crawford and Robyn Ah Mow. "It'll be a great match," said Shoji.
** Honors to Valiengo, Navalta **
The heart of the BYU-Hawaii volleyball team, Anik Valiengo, was
named the NAIA Player of the Year yesterday. Wilfred Navalta of
BYUH was named coach of the year. A 5-8 senior setter from
Brazil, the 30-year-old Valiengo led the Seasiders to the NAIA
national title this year. She was also a starter on three other
Seasider NAIA title winners. Navalta, who has a 260-58 record in
his 10 years at BYUH, coached the Seasiders to their sixth-ever
national championship this season. Also honored by the NAIA were
Becky Laubach of BYUH (second team), Solene Duvauchelle of Hawaii
Pacific (second team), and Hawaii Baptist grad Stacy Tongg of Cal
Baptist (third team).
** Surfing News **

Rochelle Ballard, Megan Abubo, and Keala Kennelly finished 7th,
9th, and 13th respectively.

World Cup, also being held at Sunset Beach. Those advancing
include Pancho Sullivan, Todd Chesser, David Gonsalves, Larry

Riley Wallace and his 2-0 UH basketball team will take on Long
Beach State tonight in a nationally televised (ESPN) game at the

trapping defense. "They like to pressure a team and we're not a
fast up-and-down club. We have to get our big guys involved."
** Baseball Bows Look Good--on Paper **
After two consecutive disappointing seasons, UH baseball coach
Les Murakami promises that the 1995-96 Rainbows will be vastly
improved. Stopping short of promising of a WAC or Regional
title, Murakami has several reasons to be optimistic: a strong
pitching staff--led by Olympian-to-be Mark Johnson, Paul Ah Yat,
Robby Robinson and Jay Spurgeon; a talented infield--which
includes the sure gloves of shortstop Jaime Ahu and second
baseman Jody Napuunoa; a faster-than-Speedy-Gonzales outfield
foursome of Neal Honma, Bobby Medeiros, Jason Ross, and Keoni
Hansen; and several talented young players, including second-year
outfield Kelly Konishi and true freshman Kenn Wakakuwa and Gerg
Millichap.

to win the title." To do so, the Wahine will have to add ASU, a
team described by one coach as one of the best defensive clubs in
the nation, to their list of victims. Said Shoji: "I think
you'll see two great defensive teams battling it out. It'll be a

** I Can Do It, says Lee **
St. Louis High School football coach Cal Lee, addressing a crowd
at the Honolulu Quarterback luncheon yesterday, said he is
prepared to be the next head coach at the University of Hawaii.
The architect of a St. Louis program that has won 10 consecutive
ILH and Oahu Prep Bowl championships, Lee downplayed his lack of
college coaching experience--he was an assistant at Willamette
College for a couple of years--by pointing out that he has the
most head coaching experience of any of the candidates. "You'll
never know what a head coach's responsibilities are unless you've
been there, believe me," said Lee. "I'm not a Gerry Faust,"
quipped Lee. "I'm a different man. What we're doing at St.
Louis isn't a fluke." UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida, the man
who will choose the next coach, is currently interviewing
candidates and says he will announce his decision by Dec. 15.
** Fuamatu Honored **
UH-Hilo middle blocker Tanya Fuamatu was named to the 12-player
AVCA Division II All-America first team yesterday. A 5-8 senior
from Kalihi, Fuamatu is the Vulcan's career leader in kills,
blocks, and digs. A highly sought after player as a University
High senior, Fuamatu said she was glad to have attended UH-Hilo
and played for Vulcan coach Sharon Peterson. "She taught me not
only a lot about volleyball about life--stuff that I'll keep with
me for the rest of my life."
----
Fuamatu is the product of a very athletic family. Younger
brother Chris Fuamatu-Maafala was this year's Western Athletic
Conference freshman of year for his outstanding play as a running
back for the University of Utah. And younger sister Valasi
Sepulona was the OIA Eastern Division player of the year and led
Farrington to the OIA championship.
** Justice Prevails **
His time in the brig served, Justice Sueing has been cleared to
return to active duty for the UH basketball team beginning with
tomorrow night's game at Long Beach State. A 6-foot-8 power
forward and the Bows' best defender, Sueing was ineligible to
play in Hawaii's first four games for elbowing Utah player Keith
Van Horne in the WAC postseason tournament last March. According
to head coach Riley Wallace, Sueing must earn his way back into
the starting lineup. "We're 2-0 without him," said Wallace.
Tonight's game will be televised on ESPN, beginning at 7 pm HST.
** Wahine Win Rematch **
The UH Wahine basketball team avenged last Friday night's loss to
Buffalo by defeating the Royals 71-59 last night before a
sitting-room-everywhere crowd of 337 at the cavernous Special
Events Arena. Nani Cockett scored 22 points and grabbed 6
rebounds and Nani Flores powered in 17 points and snagged 5
boards for the Wahine (3-2). Hawaii has a couple weeks off
before returning to action for the Dec 19-21 Ala Moana Hotel
Paradise Classic.

** Wahine Crush Cardinal **
Hawaii's 30th victory was supposed to be a tough one. It wasn't.
Amassing an impressive 20 blocks, and with Joselyn Robins soaring
for 13 kills, the second-ranked UH Wahine volleyball team easily
defeated Louisville 15-4, 15-7, 15-2 last night in an NCAA
Tournament second round game before a jubilant crowd of 10,225 at
the Special Events Arena. The triumph was Hawaii's 30th of the
season without a loss and propelled them to a Mountain Regional
semifinal match-up against 13th ranked Arizona State on Thursday
at the Special Events Arena. "They are certainly capable of
winning the national championship," said Louisville coach Don
Hardin about the Wahine. "They have outstanding net play, they
won all the long rallies, they play great defense, and they held
us to our lowest hitting percentage (.068) of the year."
** And Then There Were Five **
Yesterday, University of Hawaii athletic director Hugh Yoshida
announced the five finalists for the head football coaching
position: Duane Akina, 39, associate head coach and offensive
coordinator at Arizona; Norm Chow, 49, associate head coach and
offensive coordinator at Brigham Young; Cal Lee, 49, athletic
director and head football coach at St. Louis High School; Fred
VonAppen, 53, defensive line coach at Colorado and former
assistant for the San Francisco 49ers under Bill Walsh; and Bill
Young, 48, defensive coordinator at Ohio State. Yoshida said he
plans to begin formal interviews with the candidates this week
and hopes to have the new coach on board by Dec. 15.

** Bows Fall in Wagner Finale **
A tearful Bob Wagner bid farewell to his team, his coaches, and
Hawaii football fans following the Rainbows' 24-20 loss to
Oklahoma State last night at Aloha Stadium. Said Wagner, who was
terminated by athletic director Hugh Yoshida on Tuesday, "My
whole time here was so special. I'll never forget this." On the
field, the Rainbows played in their typical scrappy fashion,
coming back after trailing 24-7 midway through the fourth
quarter. But as has been the case all year, it was too little
too late for Hawaii, which finished a disappointing 4-8 in 1995.
Following the loss, Wagner, the UH head coach for the past nine
seasons, joined his senior players for the traditional walk
around the Aloha Stadium field. After completing his lap,
embracing several players along the way, Wagner paused at the
entrance to the locker room tunnel and blew a two-handed kiss to
what was left of the crowd of 25,272. "I'll never forget this,"
Wagner echoed while striding up the tunnel for the final time.

Senior defensive back Clint Kuboyama was named the Bows' most
valuable player for the '95 season at an awards ceremony
yesterday morning. Warrior club awards for consistently
outstanding performances went to Shane Olivera, Eddie Klaneski,
Rod York, Tyler Tanigawa, Johnny Macon, and Matt Harding.
** National Title to BYUH **
For the fourth time in the last five years, the NAIA Women's
Volleyball title banner will hang in Cannon Activities Center in
Laie, the latest one a result of BYU-Hawaii's 6-15, 15-12, 15-12,
15-5 championship game triumph over Puget Sound last night in San
Diego. Anik Valiengo, the setter and team captain of the
Seasiders, was named tournament MVP. "This was the hardest
nationals for me," said Valiengo, a starter on four Seasider
national title winners. "Being ranked No. 1 and being favored
here, I've had to be real strong for the team." And she was,
rallying the Seasiders after an opening game loss to the Loggers
last night by distributing precise passes to an array of Seasider
teammates, particularly Daniela Carneiro (22 kills), Ana Alves
(9) and Becky Laubach (8). BYUH's title is its sixth overall.
Hawaii-Hilo has won five.
** Wahine-Cardinals Tonight **
A talented and confident UH Wahine volleyball team (29-0) will
square off against Louisville in an NCAA Tournament second round
game tonight at the sold-out Special Events Arena. Leading
Hawaii will be Angelica Ljungquist, the Big West Conference
player of the year. "We are confident and having fun playing,"
said Ljunquist, a 6-3 junior from Vallentuna, Sweden. "The
harmony and chemistry between teammates all came naturally to
us." A victory tonight will land Hawaii the host spot for the
four-team Mountain Regional this Thursday and Friday.

Washington junior linebacker Ink Aleaga (Maryknoll '91) of Aiea
was picked on the first team All-Pac 10 by coaches. Aleaga, the
antithesis of "outspoken," is becoming a legend in Seattle as
"The Silent Assassin." UW head coach Jim Lambright says he has a
sense for what's happening on a football field and can get to the
ball faster than others.
----
Oregon senior defensive end Troy Bailey (St. Louis '91) of
Mililani was named on the second-team All-Pac 10 for the second
year in a row even though he missed the heart of the season with
injuries. Washington's Lambright said Bailey was the best member
of the Oregon defensive line that stopped the Huskies with 16 net
yards rushing and led the Pac-10 in rushing defense and
quarterback sacks.
----
Greg Andrasick (Iolani '92) of Nuuanu kicked four field goals in
four tries, including a 38-yarder in the fourth quarter that
stifled a USC rally, as UCLA earned an Aloha Bowl bid by winning
four of its last six games. Andrasick, a fourth-year junior, is a
walk-on.
----
Kathy Goods (Kamehameha '92) of Kihei, Maui has finished her
volleyball career at Idaho State with six career and match

Abe was eighth in kills with 3.18 and seventh in digs with 2.78
per game.
----
Setter Erin Berg (Punahou '95) of Manoa was named to the Atlantic
Coast Conference all-freshman team and won her third ACC rookie
of the week award when she had 66 assists and 10 digs in four
games as UNC beat Duke to get into the ACC Tournament.
----
Janel Ikeda (Mid-Pacific '94) of Manoa was named to the American

Senior Patrick Kesi (Farrington '91) started all season at
offensive tackle and Ikaika Malloe (Kamehameha '92) of Waimanalo
started at rover for Washington's football team, along with Ink
Aleaga (above). Opu Seminavage (Waianae '90) was the Huskies'
long snapper. True freshman Olin Kreutz (St. Louis '95) played a
great deal on the offensive line and Patrick Kesi's brother,
Petrocelli (St. Louis '93) was a backup offensive lineman.
----
Vae Tata (St. Louis '94) of Honolulu started five games at
defensive end for UCLA before he tore knee ligaments.

** Seasiders to Semis **
Top-seeded BYU-Hawaii advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA
women's national volleyball tournament by defeating Columbia
(Mo.) College 15-12, 15-7, 15-8 in a quarterfinal match yesterday
at Point Loma Nazarene College in San Diego. The Seasiders fell

tonight's championship game if they beat No. 4 Fresno Pacific
today.
** More Candidates Seek UH Football Spot **
A former Longhorn, a former Bow, and a former All-Pro are among
the latest candidates added to the list of University of Hawaii
head football coach hopefuls. Former Texas coach Fred Akers, who
coached the Longhorns for ten years in the mid-70s through mid-
80s before moving on to Purdue, has thrown his Stetson into the
ring. Also applying for the position is Buzzy Preston, a former
UH player and assistant coach who has coached at Washington State
the past two seasons. Pro football fans will also recall the
name of a third new candidate: Joe DeLamielleure, an All-Pro
offensive lineman who cleared holes Buffalo Bills teammate O.J.
Simpson. DeLamielleure is currently an assistant at Liberty
University. The three join six other candidates who have already
announced their intention to seek the position of recently-fired
Bob Wagner, including Norm Chow, BYU associate head coach; Duane
Akina, associate head coach at Arizona; Cal Lee, head coach and
athletic director at St. Louis High School; Adam Rita, former UH
offensive coordinator and most recently a coach in the Canadian
Football League; Fred Von Appen, an assistant at Colorado; and
Bill Young, defensive coordinator at Ohio State.
----
Meanwhile, the Bows will close the 1995 season with a game
against Oklahoma State tonight at Aloha Stadium. Seniors John
Hao, Rodney Glover, and Phil Cunningham, now benchwarmers but all
starters at some point in their careers, walked out of practice
on Thursday as a form of protest against the way they felt they
were treated by Wagner. Wagner, who barred the three from
staying with the rest of the team at a hotel last night, said he
will allow them to suit up for tonight's game. "They've come too
far and deserve to be on the sideline and participate in the
Senior Walk," he said.

The job of choosing the University of Hawaii's next football
coach falls into the hands of the man who axed its most recent
one. Athletic director Hugh Yoshida, who sent the Islands into a
frenzy when he fired head football coach Bob Wagner on Tuesday,
has been given the authority by UH president Kenneth Mortimer to
choose Wagner's replacement. The leading candidate for the job
is BYU offensive coordinator Norm Chow, whose name popped up
most
frequently in informal polls of current Rainbow players. Also in
contention are Arizona assistant and Punahou grad Duane Akina,
St. Louis High coach Cal Lee, former UH assistant Adam Rita, and
Auburn offensive coordinator Tommy Bowden, the son of Florida
State coach Bobby Bowden. Said UH offensive lineman Marcus

** It's Official: Wags is Out **
UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida called a press conference
yesterday morning to announce his decision to fire head football
coach Bob Wagner and his assistant coaches. Pointing to
decreased attendance and gate revenues as critical criteria,
Yoshida, addressing a crowd of several dozen at the Special
Events Arena, said he had decided after the Rainbows' loss to Air
Force on Saturday night that it was time for a change. While
Yoshida was fielding questions, UH basketball coach Riley Wallace
angrily interrupted the proceedings, questioning Wagner's
dismissal and pointing out that UH coaches should not be
terminated because of falling gate totals. "Nobody ever told us
that was an important criteria for keeping our jobs," said
Wallace. When it was Wagner's turn to address the small crowd,
he was emotional, choking back tears as he answered questions.
"I'm disappointed...hurt," said Wagner. "But I'm not bitter.
Being bitter doesn't get you anywhere." Wagner is still owed
$200,000 in salary for the next two years. It is not clear if he
will continue working at UH in some capacity or if his contract
will be bought out.
-----
With Wagner gone, the focus immediately turned to questions about
who his successor will be. The leading candidates are BYU
assistant coach Norm Chow, 49, a Punahou grad who has coached on
the Cougar staff for 20 years; Duane Akina, 39, also a Punahou
grad and currently associate head coach at Arizona under former
UH-coach Dick Tomey; and Cal Lee, 49, a graduate of Kalani High
School and the architect of the highly successful St. Louis High
School football program that has produced 10 straight Oahu Prep
Bowl winners. All three have indicated they will apply for the
job.

** Wagner Axed **
Bob Wagner, the man who led the University of Hawaii to its
first-ever Western Athletic Conference championship in 1992 and
first-ever triumphs over rival BYU, was fired along with his
entire staff yesterday by athletic director Hugh Yoshida. Both
Wagner and Yoshida could not be reached for comment. A press
conference is scheduled for this morning. Wagner compiled a
58-48-3 record in his nine years as the Rainbow head man. But
after his team captured the WAC crown in 1992, its fortunes and
fans disappeared. This year's Bows are 4-7 with one game
remaining. Said longtime UH assistant George Lumpkin, now
suddenly jobless: "I guess Hugh did what he had to do. But when
you deal with people's livelihoods, its pretty devastating. It's
very hard to stomach right now." Sources close to the university
say that Wagner's successor will be named in a week or two.
Among the candidates confirming they will apply for the job are
BYU offensive coordinator Norm Chow and St. Louis High School
coach Cal Lee.

** Host Spot for Wahine **
Good news arrived on the University of Hawaii campus in the form
of a regional host spot for the UH Wahine in the NCAA National
Championship Volleyball Tournament. The second-ranked Wahine
(29-0) earned a first round bye and next Sunday at the Special
Events Arena will play the winner of a first round battle between
Central Florida (32-9) and Louisville (28-5). If victorious in
that match, Hawaii will then host the Mountain Regional on Dec 7
and 8. The regional winner then will advance to the Final Four
Dec. 14 and 16 at Amherst, Mass.
** Bows Win Tourney **
Anthony Harris poured in 30 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and
dished out 4 assists to lead the UH men's basketball team to a
72-66 triumph over St. Louis University in the championship game
of the United Airlines Tipoff Tournament last night before 6,908
fans at the Special Events Arena. Former Kalaheo star Alika
Smith added 16 points and 6 rebounds for the Bows (2-0). Harris
was named the tournament MVP and was joined by Smith on the
first
team.
** UConn Tames Wahine **
Connecticut, the nation's third-ranked women's basketball,
defeated the UH Wahine 65-48 to win the 17th Wahine Classic title
yesterday afternoon at the Special Events Arena. Trailing by 11
at the half, the Wahine came out of the locker room on fire,
cutting UConn's lead to three in the first six minutes. But the
defending national champions (3-1), paced by All-America
candidates Kora Wolters (18 points) and Jennifer Rizzotti (9
points, 7 assists) were too strong, outscoring Hawaii 11-1 in the
final six minutes. Nani Cockett, who earned all-tournament first
team honors along with Wolters and Rizzotti, scored 10 points to
lead the Wahine (2-1). UH freshman Hedy Liu, a former University
High star, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee
just a minute after entering the game in the first half. She
will be lost for the season.
** Winning Isn't Everything, says Wags **
"Are we an apple or an orange?" asked UH football coach Bob
Wagner in reference to his football program. "When we win, we're
an apple like everyone else. But when we lose and attendance is
down, all of a sudden we're an orange. There are differences."
Wagner's philosophizing came in response to questions about his
job status as the UH football honcho. Using the winning-isn't-
everything argument, Wagner pointed to his team's high graduation
rate and relatively good off-field behavior as barometers for
success. "All you can do is do your best...and whatever happens,
happens," said Wagner, whose Bows close their 1995 season this
Saturday night against Oklahoma State at Aloha Stadium.
** Salud Loses Title Tilt **
Former Nanakuli resident Jesus Salud lost a 12-round decision to
Antonio Cermeno in a WBA junior featherweight title bout
yesterday before about 8,000 fans at Caracas, Venezuela. Salud's
strategy to crowd his taller opponent worked for the first half
of the fight, but Cermeno rallied in the later rounds, opening a
gash above Salud's right eye and withstanding a final-round
barrage from the former-champion.

** Morgan Corners Bows **
Quarterback Beau Morgan amassed 309 yards in total offense,
rushing for 206 and passing for 103, to lead Air Force to a 45-28
Western Athletic Conference football victory over Hawaii last
night in front of 23,372 fans at Aloha Stadium. The Falcons
finished at 6-2 in the WAC, earning a share of the conference
championship with Colorado State, BYU, and Utah. Meanwhile, the
Rainbows are lingering near the bottom of the WAC standings with
a 2-6 league and 4-7 overall marks. Hawaii fought hard last
night, actually outgaining the Falcons on offense 517 to 507.
But the Rainbows could not stop Morgan (four rushing touchdowns)
when they had to. "I give a lot of credit to my offensive line,"
said Morgan. "I had a lot of big holes and big seams. Credit
those guys." Hawaii will close its season against Oklahoma State
this Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

** Saints March to 10th Oahu Title **
The St. Louis Crusaders captured their 10th straight Oahu Prep
Bowl title by edging a relentless but penalty-prone Kahuku squad
27-26 last night at Aloha Stadium. A crowd of 29,129 watched the
two teams trade the lead several times throughout the contest.
But as has been the case in most Crusader games this season,
quarterback Darnell Arceneaux ignited the top-ranked Saints when
they needed a spark The 6-foot-3 senior completed 12 of 25
passes for 211 yards, throwing for two scores and running for a
third. "The pressure is off," said Arceneaux. "We won and I can
go home and sleep tonight." On the other hand, sleep may not
come easy for the Red Raider players and their coach Doug
Semones, who saw their best chance to beat the Saints fizzle.
Kahuku, led by Jason Keo's 120 yards, amassed 241 yards on the
ground against a tough Crusader defense. However, the Red
Raiders were penalized 12 times for 126 yards, including a
critical holding call that negated a touchdown. "I'm not gonna
cry about the officiating," said an upset Semones. "Our team
played hard. They played with class. They played like
champions."
----
In the Prep Bowl preliminary game, Chris Paogofie rushed for 98
yards and two touchdowns on offense and intercepted two passes on
defense to lead fourth-ranked Waianae (8-3-1) to a 35-21 upset of
second-ranked Punahou (11-3). Jimmy Bennett passed for 332
yards
and three TDs for the Buffanblu.
** Bow Men, Women Win Openers **
The UH men's and women's basketball teams opened their 1995-96
seasons with victories yesterday at the Special Events Arena.
The women, with Nani Cockett (25) and Tania Brunton (15)
combining for 40 points, topped Washington State 76-69 in an
opening round game of the eight-team Rainbow Wahine Classic
yesterday afternoon. Freshman star B.J. Itoman, an Iolani grad,
added 14 points for Hawaii. The men were also victorious with
starting guards Anthony Harris (25 points) and Alika Smith (23)
the big guns in a 78-72 triumph over Dayton last night in the
four-team Hawaii Tipoff Tournament. The Wahine will take on
Baylor in one semifinal game this afternoon. Defending national
champions Connecticut squares off against Oregon State in the
other. Riley Wallace and his men's team will meet St. Louis
University tomorrow night for the championship of that
tournament.
** Bows vs Falcons Tonight **
Hawaii will meet Air Force in a Western Athletic Conference
football matchup tonight at Aloha Stadium. The Bows, 4-6 overall
and 2-5 in the conference, will have to confront a Falcon team
(7-4 and 5-2) with a disciplined option attack and a smallish,
swarming defense. "We've practiced hard this week and we'll play
hard on Saturday," said UH coach Bob Wagner. "We'll see if
that's good enough."
** Sumo Day 14 Results **

** Wahine Perfect **
An appreciative Thanksgiving night crowd of 5,981 was on hand at
the Special Events Arena to extend its mahalo to UH senior
captain Jenny Wilton and her UH Wahine volleyball teammates, who
struggled but eventually subdued Arizona 15-5, 6-15, 15-11, 15-2.
It was the final regular season match for the Wahine, who finished
29-0 and now await word about where they will play in the
postseason. Last night, they had a determined Arizona team to
contend
with first. After splitting the first two games, the Wahine found
themselves in danger of losing a second, falling behind 7-11 in
game three. But behind the tough serving of Wilton and Joselyn
Robins, Hawaii scored the final eight points of the game to win
it, 15-11. Finding their confidence again, the Wahine blew out
the Wildcats 15-2 in game four. "I was worried," said UH coach Dave
Shoji. "I was frustrated; the team was frustrated. I just had to have
faith in their ability to pull it out."
** Bow Men, Wahine Open Hoop Seasons Today **
The 1995-96 regular season coming-out parties for the UH men's

women's team begin their season as hosts of the eight-team Wahine
Basketball Classic. Hawaii, with forwards Nani Cockett and Tania
Brunton returning after sitting out most of last season with knee
injuries, will take on Washington State in one of four opening
round games today at the Special Events Arena. In other
matchups, defending national women's champion Connecticut will
face Northern Arizona, North Carolina State will meet Oregon
State, and Baylor will challenge Fairfield. Tonight at the SEA,
Riley Wallace and his UH men will take on Dayton in an opening
round game of the four-team Hawaii Tipoff Tournament. Louisiana
State squares off against St. Louis University in another first
round matchup.
** Prep Bowl Tonight **
ILH champion St. Louis and OIA titleholder Kahuku will meet
tonight at Aloha Stadium in the 23rd Oahu Prep Bowl. The
Crusaders (11-1), who have won ten straight ILH championships and
nine consecutive Prep Bowl titles, had the stingiest defense in
the ILH this season, allowing just 183.7 yards a game, and the
league's best player in senior quarterback Darnell Arceneaux
(1,800 yards in total offense and 20 TD passes). However, in the
regular season the Crusaders did not face a team with such an
array of offensive weapons as Kahuku, which averaged 550 total
yards per contest. The Red Raiders have a huge offensive line
(260 pounds average per player) and three running backs in Isaac
Aalona, Ken Faavae, and Jason Keo who have rushed for over 100
yards in a game this season. "We'll be able to run on them,"
said Kahuku coach Doug Semones. "They've been playing passing
teams all year. They haven't seen a running attack like we
have."

** No. 28 for Wahine **
The UH Wahine won their 28th volleyball match without a loss this
season by cruising past Arizona 15-4, 15-8, 15-7 last night at

** Kahuku Rides Big Line **
With a college-sized offensive front line, the OIA champion
Kahuku Red Raiders may present ILH champion St. Louis Crusaders
their toughest Prep Bowl test yet. The two teams meet Friday
night at Aloha Stadium. The Crusaders, seeking their 10th
straight Prep Bowl title, must contend with a Kahuku offensive

** Bows Routed **
The University of Hawaii football team fell to a disappointing 4-
6 record after a 49-10 whipping at the hands of San Diego State
(8-3) last night at Aloha Stadium. A crowd of 27,561 watched the
Aztecs' George Jones rush for 164 yards and score three
touchdowns, and Billy Blanton complete 16 of 26 passes for 321
yards. Meanwhile, the Rainbows' bread-and-butter ground game
was
anything but lethal, amassing just 45 yards on 34 attempts. Said
UH defensive back Clint Kuboyama: "I know we were blown out by a
team with skill, but if we're really that bad, I feel like I
ought to go out and commit suicide. It's such a sick feeling.
People were talking trash about us all week, and we proved
everybody right." The Bows will attempt to regroup for next
weekend's game against Air Force (7-4) at Aloha Stadium. "We
need to get back to the drawing board," said running back Brett
Washington. "Nothing's working right now."
** Kamehameha, Punahou Win Titles **
An overflow crowd of over 2,000 at Kamehameha's Kekuhaupio Gym

state high school volleyball titles last night. The Warrior
girls, with five senior starters, defeated a young Punahou team
15-4, 18-16 in the final. Shelly Kim and Rachel Watson had eight
kills apiece for Kamehameha. Boo Arnold contributed seven more.
In the boys' title match, Punahou, behind 6-foot-6 Scott Wong's
20 kills, edged a scrappy and determined Kamehameha team 15-13,
7-15, 15-10.

** Wahine Sweep 49ers **
With astonishing ease, the UH Wahine blew out Long Beach State
15-11, 15-3, 15-6 in a Big West Conference volleyball match

night. "Hawaii is a strong at all positions," said the 49ers'

and they have a more aggressive attitude now. It's a good team."
Good indeed. Paced by the sure hands of setter Robyn Ah Mow (39

Therese Crawford (12), Joselyn Robins (11) and Jenny Wilton (10),
the Wahine (26-0 overall and 17-0 in the Big West) made short

Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku. Before the Saints'
final 16-play, 77-yard march, which included two fourth-down

struggled to advance the football. "We had to fight like hell
just to stay in it," said St. Louis coach Cal Lee. "Punahou

to 2-2 after being forced out by Kirishima (2-2).
** Class of 91 Flunks **
The hard times for the 1995 UH football team can be traced to the
deterioration of its 1991 recruiting class whose members should
be fifth-year seniors this season. Of the 21 high school players
recruited five years ago, only two--Agenhart Ellis and George
Noga--are starters this season. Five flunked out of UH, four
transferred to other schools, three were kicked off the team, and
one "retired" because of an injury. All the others are still
with Bows as reserve players. "We've lost some players along the
way," said UH coach Bob Wagner. "It happens sometimes, and it's
not good."

** Fans Flocking to See Wahine **
With four home matches remaining, the UH Wahine (25-0) are within
range of becoming the first college volleyball program to draw
100,000 fans in a season. The Wahine have drawn 78,827 fans, an
NCAA record, for their 17 home matches this season, an average of
4,637 per contest. UH officials reported that approximately
15,000 tickets have been sold for the Wahine's two matches
against Long Beach State (18-7) on Thursday and Friday. Hawaii
has already clinched the Big West Conference championship and are
looking to finish the season undefeated and to earn a regional
host spot in the NCAA tournament.

While fans are swarming in record numbers to watch the Wahine,
Bow football rooters have diminished considerably. The football
Bows, 4-5 this season, have averaged only 30,279 fans for their
four home games in 1995. Last season, an average of 33,081 fans
turned out per game. In 1993, the Bows' per-game average was
35,631. Hawaii coach Bob Wagner had a simple answer for how to
increase attendance: "We just need to win more", he said. "When
we struggle, that's just not good advertising."
** Sumo Day Three Results **

Kotonowaka (1-2), and Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli),
who defeated Aogiyama (2-1). Grand champion Takanohana also

** Quarterback Derby Again for Bows? **
Who'll it be? Johnny Macon? Glenn Freitas? John Hao? Rodney
Glover? Such is the dilemma for UH football coach Bob Wagner, a
man searching for a quarterback to lead his Rainbows (4-5) this
weekend against visiting San Diego State. Wagner had hoped to
avoid the musical-chairs situation that occurred with the
quarterback situation last season, but a knee injury has plagued
Freitas and Macon, after a brilliant performance against Fresno
State, looked anything but other-worldly in Hawaii's loss to
Colorado State this past weekend. Hao and Glover, both seniors,
have seen limited time with the first unit in practice this
season and are unlikely candidates to step in. "We'll make a
decision which way we'll go later this week," said Wagner.
** Sumo Day 2 Results **
Only one of the three rikishi from Hawaii won on the second day
of the Fukuoka Grand Sumo Tournament. The victor was ozeki
(champion) Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae), who
improved to 2-0 by muscling out Mitoizumi (1-1). Meanwhile,
grand champion Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) and Konishiki
(Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) both fell to 1-1 after dropping
their matches. Akebono stumbled and fell to the ring after
Takatoriki (1-1) side-stepped him while Konishiki was forced out
by Misugisato (2-0).

boys and girls will be held Saturday at Kamehameha.
